INSTRUMENTATION, MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL

Lab 1

Objectives

1) To analyze the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of a wastewater treatment plant.

2) To monitor the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of a wastewater treatment plant.

Questions:

1. Describe a typical wastewater treatment process with the aid of a schematic diagram.
2. Explain the four stages in wastewater treatment.
3. Describe in details the happenings in these various stages:
a. Mechanical treatment
b. Biological treatment
c. Chemical treatment.
4. Elaborate in details activated sludge (AS).
5. What is added in a typical aeration unit?
6. Define sludge in wastewater treatment terms. What is sludge treatment?
7. Explain in detail the happenings in the three-stage sludge unit. What are the products of
each of the stages?
8. Provide TWO (2) possible ideas (each with explanation) on how to improve the plant
efficiency.
9. Describe or explain:
a. BOD
b. COD
c. TSS
10. Briefly explain the laboratory procedure to determine COD and BOD.
