Accessible Recreation – These Lands are for Everyone
Earlier this year, Living the Green Life featured Environmental Justice (EJ) because “the environment is for everyone.” A key factor in ensuring access and enjoyment of the environment by all is providing accessible recreation opportunities on public land which ensures “these lands are for everyone.” Accessible recreation features make it possible for all New Yorkers, including those with disabilities to enjoy trails, camping, fishing, hunting, and all that our great outdoors has to offer. The cornerstone of accessible recreation is that it provides “access” by recognizing the need to recreate for all and removing any barriers or impediments. To help promote equitable access and experience, DEC provides the following:
Accessible Recreation Destinations (ARDs) on State Lands –
- Check out the Accessible Destinations Map when planning your next outdoor adventure. Use it to explore the wheelchair accessible features at the developed campgrounds and day use areas in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks. The map also provides information about education centers, hiking trails, primitive camping, wildlife viewing, waterway access sites, and land areas statewide.
