The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani was established to reform higher education in the country. AUIS prepares its graduates for a rapidly changing economy and globalized society by offering an American-style, comprehensive education. At AUIS, students are required to have excellent language skills which they develop in the Academic Preparatory Program, where learning how to read and write in English is juxtaposed with learning student success skills. Students enrolled in the undergraduate program receive education in disciplines ranging from effective persuasive writing to the scientific method to statistics - and competent in a specialization – from management to construction engineering to web systems. This liberal style of education with multi-disciplinary courses fosters creativity, critical thinking and a greater knowledge of the world. 

At AUIS, there is a strong emphasis on extracurricular activities which promote student engagement in volunteering initiatives, community outreach, internships, student clubs, athletics and the creative arts. The American University of Iraq Foundation has started a fund to support refugees and internally displaced persons whose studies have been interrupted due to the current crisis. The fund aims to provide assistance that covers tuition and living expenses for study at AUIS.

Unrestricted gifts of any amount to the American University of Iraq Foundation’s Annual Fund are gratefully received and are generally used to support the ongoing operations of the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani. Gifts of any size may also be accepted into accounts restricted for the following purposes, as determined by the Foundation’s board of directors in consultation with the University’s administration:

• Providing state-of-the-art campus facilities
• Building the largest English-language library in Iraq
• Recruiting high-caliber faculty
• Faculty research
• Student research
• International exchange programs
• Establishing research and policy institutes
• Merit scholarships
• Scholarships for female students
• Scholarships for students from rural areas
• Enhancing student organizations and campus life
• Donors can sponsor a new scholarship for students, establish a faculty chair, expand the library’s collection, or support the continued development of the new campus, among other opportunities.
