Like a lot of good questions, it depends on your business needs.  What is the goal of an ideal APM?  Does it mean 99.999% availability?  Perhaps it is a favorable overall end user experience when using the application but, as compared to what? Oracle-Sun Deal Puts Java Back in the Limelight

"It's almost impossible to overestimate the importance of Java to Oracle," wrote industry commentator Neil McAllister as the first rumors of the Oracle-Sun deal began to surface last week. McAllister referred to Java as "the crown jewel of this deal." So the question reverberating through Javaland now is: does this mean Java is back in the limelight? Or will Oracle's proprietary ways intervene in the open-source trajectory for Java set by Sun? EC May Not Clear Oracle-Sun Merger: Reuters

As the clock ticks and the September 3 deadline nears, speculation is rising that the European Commission may throw a spanner into the Oracle-Sun merger and delay things another four months. Reuters said late Tuesday that EC regulators were fretting over the competitive implications of Oracle’s acquisition of MySQL and debating whether to open a full-scale investigation. If the EC decides to probe, the acquisition could get a pass, a fail or get loaded down with conditions, dragging out any resolution until late December, early January. Further delays will give IBM and HP even more time than they’ve already had to rustle Sun’s remaining hardware customers. They’ve been chasing them since Oracle announced its intentions to buy Sun in April. ... (more)

‘Save MySQL from Oracle’ Petition Collects 13,600+ Signatures So Far

MySQL Journal on Ulitzer MySQL creator Monty Widenius’ petition to stop Oracle from getting the MySQL open source database along with Sun Microsystems had collected more than 13,600 signatures on Sunday, the day before Widenius has promised to start circulating the results to “regulators, governmental bodies, parliaments and journalists.” Widenius is also hoping to get regulators besides the European Commission investigating the proposed merger. He has refused to identify which regulators he means. According to its self-imposed deadline the EC has until January 27 to decide whether to wave the deal through or not although Oracle has broadly hinted that it has the EC’s approval in its pocket.
