On the day when the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 12,000 for the first time since June 2008, it was impossible not to correlate the eloquence and optimism of President Obama's "State of the Union" speech on Tuesday night with the restoration of a sense of perspective and hope in the USA about the future. Obama grasped the nettle full-on. "We are poised for progress," he declared, adding: "Two years after the worst recession most of us have ever known, the stock market has come roaring back. Corporate profits are up. The economy is growing." As one blogger expressed it, though - and he is a former Goldman Sachs trader called Tyler Durden, so he ought to know wheref he speaks: "There was a massive pink elephant in the room called reality though." Durden's gripe is with what he deems to be the unreality of Obama's praising Google and Facebook so highly in an Ameri... (more)

JBoss Could Be "Sun's Best Defense Against .NET," Says Marc Fleury

(August 27, 2002) - It all began earlier this month when Scott McNealy implied in an interview that the Open Source model would hamstring Sun completely in its attempt to out-gun Microsoft in the enterprise-level computing arena by threatening the licensing revenue Sun and others need to finance J2EE's advertising and R&D.; Now the founder of JBoss, one of the most widely spread OS implementations of all, a full-fledged application server already in its 3.0 version, has published an online rebuttal of McNealy's remarks. Writing on the main page of the JBoss site, www.jboss.org, Marc Fluery - who is also president of JBoss Group LLC - claims that OS in general "and JBoss in particular" are on the contrary "Sun's best defense against Microsoft .NET." Can OS Help Save the App Server Tier from .NET? "Only Open Source," Fleury argues, "has proven uniquely resilient to a ... (more)

JBoss Joins the JCP - But J2EE License Issue Still Unresolved

(September 24, 2003) - With the stated goal of promoting Java, JBoss Group LLC has joined the Java Community Process (JCP). Under the agreement, JBoss developers can now participate in the expert groups that develop Java standards, including J2EE. Like all commercial entities, JBoss will pay Sun $5,000 annually to qualify for JCP participation. JBoss developers had previously joined the JCP, but on an individual basis; now JBoss is a JCP member as a corporate entity. "JCP is pleased to see JBoss join the community and welcomes their contributions through the community; it's a commitment to compatibility," said Onno Kluyt, director, JCP PMO. Unresolved is the issue of whether JBoss should pay to license J2EE. JBoss says it should be exempt from paying for the Technology Compatibility Kit, because of its open-source base. The TCKs can cost from tens to hundreds of tho... (more)

The latest advancement comes from VTech Communications, which has introduced a cordless phone, the usb7100 VTech Skype, that provides the benefits and features of Skype's free Internet telephony. Donna Silbert, vice president of product management at VTech, was enthusiastic about the news. "Until now, consumers in the U.S. could only take advantage of Skype's free Internet telephony software and features when connected directly to their computer," she said. "VTech is excited to partner with Skype to offer users unlimited, superior quality voice calls using the... (more)

Aspect-Oriented Programming and You

One of the coolest parts of the new SproutCore View layer is its ability to use aspect-based programming to add behaviors to views. Aspect-based programming is built on the premise that often objects that don’t follow from the same class hierarchy may in fact need similar behaviors. This is especially true in GUI programming when designers come to you and say something like “I came up with this new widget - it looks kind of like a progress bar but it acts like a button when you click on it”. In SproutCore, you capture these common behaviors in a “mixin”.  A mixin is just a collection or properties and methods that are added to your class when you define it.  The view layer will actually look for specific hooks on your mixin so that you can automatically hook into the drawing engine, listen for events, etc.  It’s very powerful. Take the example above: with the button... (more)

Oracle + Sun by Spring?

Mergers & Acquisitions on Ulitzer We hear - well, you know how people talk - that Oracle has been quietly meeting with the European Commission and is now expecting it to take - what with the Christmas break and all - until April or May to get clearance for its acquisition of Sun Microsystems. That would be a year to 13 months after Oracle agreed to buy the joint. It took Oracle longer to get its hands on PeopleSoft, a crusade that took from June of 2003 to January of 2005 plus a federal judge throwing out the Justice Department's antitrust objections. However, PeopleSoft wasn't bleeding from its jugular the way Sun is. And that's not only sales dropping like an anchor but demoralized Sun staff fleeing too. Oracle reportedly had a short list of Sun people it really wanted to keep. One source close to Sun says the delay in closing the deal has cost Oracle half the 10 ... (more)

CloudEXPO Stories
At CloudEXPO Silicon Valley, June 24-26, 2019, Digital Transformation (DX) is a major focus with expanded DevOpsSUMMIT and FinTechEXPO programs within the DXWorldEXPO agenda. Successful transformation requires a laser focus on being data-driven and on using all the tools available that enable transformation if they plan to survive over the long term. A total of 88% of Fortune 500 companies from a generation ago are now out of business. Only 12% still survive. Similar percentages are found throughout enterprises of all sizes.
In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework. It's clear: serverless is here to stay. The adoption does come with some needed changes, within both application development and operations. That means serverless is also changing the way we leverage public clouds. Truth-be-told, many enterprise IT shops were so happy to get out of the management of physical servers within a data center that many limitations of the existing public IaaS clouds were forgiven. However, now that we've lived a few years with public IaaS clouds, developers and CloudOps pros are giving a huge thumbs down to the...
In 2017, Docker reached 24% adoption while Lambda reached 23.5% adoption among Amazon Web Services customers. Yet, the adoption rate of serverless and cost savings are dramatically better than what virtual containers can offer. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are all pushing serverless because it's easier and cheaper for their customers. Also, once apps are built using serverless frameworks, there's a higher switch-over cost to go from one cloud to another. We'll discuss this and also talk about how brand loyalty is something every subscription service is hoping to achieve. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are strengthening their offerings with serverless in the cloud.
When Enterprises started adopting Hadoop-based Big Data environments over the last ten years, they were mainly on-premise deployments. Organizations would spin up and manage large Hadoop clusters, where they would funnel exabytes or petabytes of unstructured data. However, over the last few years the economics of maintaining this enormous infrastructure compared with the elastic scalability of viable cloud options has changed this equation. The growth of cloud storage, cloud-managed big data environments, and cloud data warehouses like Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery and Azure SQL DW, have given the cloud its own gravity - pulling data from existing environments. In this presentation we will discuss this transition, describe the challenges and solutions for creating the data flows necessary to move to cloud analytics, and provide real-world use-cases and benefits obtained through adop...
Using serverless computing has a number of obvious benefits over traditional application infrastructure - you pay only for what you use, scale up or down immediately to match supply with demand, and avoid operating any server infrastructure at all. However, implementing maintainable and scalable applications using serverless computing services like AWS Lambda poses a number of challenges. The absence of long-lived, user-managed servers means that states cannot be maintained by the service. Longer function invocation times (referred to as cold starts) become very important to track, because they impact the response time of the service and will impose additional cost. Additionally, the transition to smaller individual components (much like breaking a monolithic application into microservices) results in a simpler deployment model, but makes the system as a whole increasingly complex.
