The Reason Enterprises are Failing at DevOps: To Predict the Future, Look to the Past

The Reason Enterprises are Failing at DevOps: To Predict the Future, Look to the Past

Enterprises are universally struggling to understand where the new tools and methodologies of DevOps fit into their organizations, and are universally making the same mistakes. These mistakes are not unavoidable, and in fact, avoiding them gifts an organization with sustained competitive advantage, just like it did for Japanese Manufacturing Post WWII.

The fundamental mistake is believing that DevOps fits on top of the legacy management of people and things, the way we've always done things since the industrial revolution, and it does not.  DevOps is not an addition but a replacement:  A creeping revolution in the principles of how we run IT.     When you look at the History of American Manufacturing and the costly cycles of failure that preceded adaptation to modern practices, you see the present and the future of global IT. Those that could adapt survived. Those that could not died.

Learning history's lessons is an imperative for survival in a world where the most important skill is adapting to continually accelerating change.  In this session we'll cover the specific actions necessary to adopt the new philosophy and transform into next generation organizations instead of joining former giants like Blockbuster and Toys-R-Us in history's dustbin of cautionary tales.

Culture: Change or Die

All organizations that did not originate this moment have a pre-existing culture as well as legacy technology and processes that can be more or less amenable to DevOps implementation. That organizational culture is influenced by the personalities and management styles of Executive Management, the wider culture in which the organization is situated, and the personalities of key team members at all levels of the organization. This culture and entrenched interests usually throw a wrench in the works because of misaligned incentives.

In his session at @DevOpsSummit 20th Cloud Expo, Greg Bledsoe, a managing consultant at Accenture, discussed an algorithmic method that even someone with no positional power who desires to be an agent of change can implement to achieve cultural transformation and smooth the transition to overcome these obstacles and transform the culture until it has the re-aligned silos that are characteristic of a mature DevOps implementation.

@DevOpsSummit at Cloud Expo, taking place November 12-13 in New York City, NY, is co-located with 22nd international CloudEXPO | first international DXWorldEXPO and will feature technical sessions from a rock star conference faculty and the leading industry players in the world.
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
@DevOpsSummit at Cloud Expo will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support time generally. Time spent on infrastructure development is significantly increased, and DevOps practitioners report more software releases and higher quality. Sponsors of @DevOpsSummit at Cloud Expo will benefit from unmatched branding, profile building and lead generation opportunities.

Machine learning provides predictive models which a business can apply in countless ways to better understand its customers and operations. Since machine learning was first developed with flat, tabular data in mind, it is still not widely understood: when does it make sense to use graph databases and machine learning in combination? This talk tackles the question from two ends: classifying predictive analytics methods and assessing graph database attributes. It also examines the ongoing lifecycle for machine learning in production. From this analysis it builds a framework for seeing where machine learning on a graph can be advantageous.'
Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by sharing information within the building and with outside city infrastructure via real time shared cloud capabilities.
