DevOps and the Age of Cloud Craftsmanship
Five years ago development was seen as a dead-end career, now it's anything
but - with an explosion in mobile and IoT initiatives increasing the demand
for skilled engineers. But apart from having a ready supply of great coders,
what constitutes true ‘DevOps Royalty'? It'll be the ability to craft
resilient architectures, supportability, security everywhere across the
software lifecycle.
In his keynote at @DevOpsSummit at 20th Cloud Expo, Jeffrey Scheaffer, GM
and SVP, Continuous Delivery Business Unit at CA Technologies, will share his
vision about the true ‘DevOps Royalty' and how it will take a new breed of
digital cloud craftsman, architecting new platforms with a new set of tools
to achieve it. He will also present a number of important insights and
findings from a recent cloud and DevOps study - outlining the synergie... (more)
Many factors are contributing to the endlessly increasing volumes of data
that organizations must now deal with, including cloud-based infrastructure
and virtualization. This data contains a wealth of information that
enterprises can use to transform their businesses, but first, a place for it
must be found. Software-defined storage (SDS) has been gaining ground because
it is highly flexible as well as affordable.
It's no surprise, then, that the SDS market is expected to realize revenues
of nearly $16.2 billion in 2021. Enterprise storage spending is shifting from
on-premises IT infrastructure toward private, public and hybrid cloud
environments and from hardware-defined, dual-controller array designs toward
SDS.
However, buying options are not as clear-cut as you might like them to be.
All SDS options on the market share certain traits, but they are not all

Optimizing Alignment - Dovetailing DevOps and the Cloud
As DevOps methodologies expand their reach across the enterprise,
organizations face the daunting challenge of adapting related cloud
strategies to ensure optimal alignment, from managing complexity to ensuring
proper governance.
How can culture, automation, legacy apps and even budget be reexamined to
enable this ongoing shift within the modern software factory?
In their general session at @DevOpsSummit at 20th Cloud Expo, Aruna
Ravichandran, VP of Global Marketing and Strategy at CA Technologies, Christi
Liebe, CTO for Rent-a-Center, and Melissa Mitchell, VP of Strategy at

From showcase success stories from early adopters and web-scale businesses,
DevOps is expanding to organizations of all sizes, including the world's
largest enterprises - and delivering real results. Among the proven benefits,
DevOps is correlated with 20% faster time-to-market, 22% improvement in
quality, and 18% reduction in dev and ops costs, according to research firm
Vanson-Bourne. It is changing the way IT works, how businesses interact with
customers, and how organizations are buying, building, and delivering
software.

From IT Service Management to DevOps
CIOs and those charged with running IT Operations are challenged to deliver
secure, audited, and reliable compute environments for the applications and
data for the business. Behind the scenes these tasks are often accomplished
by following onerous time-consuming processes and often the management of
these environments and processes will be outsourced to multiple IT service
providers. In addition, the division of work is often siloed into traditional
"towers" that are not well integrated for cross-functional purposes. So, when
traditional IT Service Management (ITSM) meets the cloud, and equally,
DevOps, there is invariably going to be conflict.
IT/ESM needs a reboot. As a factor of IT Transformation and Digital
Transformation, IT no longer stands alone - or at least in a modern workplace
it should ... (more)

Serverless - The Next Major Shift in Cloud Computing
In 2014, Amazon announced a new form of compute called Lambda. We didn't know
it at the time, but this represented a fundamental shift in what we expect
from cloud computing. Now, all of the major cloud computing vendors want to
take part in this disruptive technology.

In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Doug Vanderweide, an instructor at Linux
Academy, discussed why major players like AWS, Microsoft Azure, IBM Bluemix,
and Google Cloud Platform are all trying to sidestep VMs and containers with
heavy investments in serverless computing, when most of the industry has its
eyes on Docker and containers.

Microservices: Choosing the Right Cloud, Services and Tools
We all know that end users experience the Internet primarily with mobile
devices. From an app development perspective, we know that successfully
responding to the needs of mobile customers depends on rapid DevOps - failing
fast, in short, until the right solution evolves in your customers'
relationship to your business. Whether you're decomposing an SOA monolith, or
developing a new application cloud natively, it's not a question of using
microservices - not doing so will be a path to eventual business failure.
In his general session at 21st Cloud Expo, Andrew Hately, an IBM
Distinguished Engineer, discussed how the real and more difficult question,
in developing microservices-based applications, is this: what's the best
combination of cloud services and tools to use to get the right results in
the specif... (more)

This includes informational siloes where business users require one set of data and tech teams require different data. DevOps intends to bridge these gaps to make tech driven operations more aligned and efficient. Apr. 9, 2018 03:45 AM EDT Reads: 905 |
