With IBM, Google, and Microsoft pouring funding into the research of quantum computing, it's really starting to look like we are going to see the benefits in the next 5 - 10 years. Google may be just weeks from announcing they reached the quantum supremacy milestone and IBM may not be far behind either.  Today, I wanted to share my thoughts on how quantum computing may affect cryptography as we know it. Effects on cryptography When we talk about the basic cryptography used for things like TLS when you access your bank's website, the premise behind securing your data is surprisingly simple. The certificate uses a public key which is really just a large number that's the result of multiplying two prime numbers together.  This key has a size typically between 256 bits and 2048 bits. It's quite a large number.  To find the two factors via brute force, in today's classica... (more)

The Right Microservices | @CloudExpo @IBMcloud @IBMDevOps @JRMcGee #DevOps #Serverless #Microservices

Microservices: Choosing the Right Cloud Services and Tools We all know that end users experience the internet primarily with mobile devices. From an app development perspective, we know that successfully responding to the needs of mobile customers depends on rapid DevOps - failing fast, in short, until the right solution evolves in your customers' relationship to your business. Whether you're decomposing an SOA monolith, or developing a new application cloud natively, it's not a question of using microservices - not doing so will be a path to eventual business failure. The real and more difficult question, in developing microservices-based applications, is this: What's the best combination of cloud services and tools to use to get the right results in the specific business situation in which you need to deliver what your end users' want. Considering that new stream... (more)

Enterprise #AI and #MachineLearning | @ExpoDX #IoT #ArtificialIntelligence

Artificial intelligence and machine learning systems are made up of code and algorithms, and as such, they work as fast as computers can process them.  Often this means massive amounts of learning can be accomplished every second without stop 24x7x365.  Code doesn't need to take weekends off, holidays, or sick time. Code doesn't get tired. It can recognize complex patterns, areas of potential improvement and problems in real-time (aka digital-time).  Given these available computing capabilities and speeds, what are executives to do with AI and machine learning, when we live and operate in relatively slow human-time, and work within organizations that work at an even slower pace of organizational-time. I believe the first step is to admit we have a problem - the problem is a difference in the speed that computers can operate, and the speeds in which us humans can pr... (more)

Open Analytics | @CloudExpo @ProgressSW #AI #IoT #BigData #Analytics

Welcome to the Era of Open Analytics Cloud applications are seeing a deluge of requests to support the exploding advanced analytics market. "Open analytics" is the emerging strategy to deliver that data through an open data access layer, in the cloud, to be directly consumed by external analytics tools and popular programming languages. An increasing number of data engineers and data scientists use a variety of platforms and advanced analytics languages such as SAS, R, Python and Java, as well as frameworks such as Hadoop and Spark. Cloud APIs are commonly designed to support application integration representing a disconnect with the analytics ecosystem. These combined trends create significant demand for a "bring-your-own-analytics" (BYOA) capability for cloud applications. In his general session at 20th Cloud Expo, Sumit Sarkar, Chief Data Evangelist at Progress... (more)

Seven Criteria for Evaluating a Blockchain Business | @ExpoDX #FinTech #Blockchain #DigitalTransformation

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Seven Criteria for Evaluating a Blockchain Business The insane world of cryptocurrency may be chock full of schemers, scammers, and sharks, but there is more to the world of blockchain than crypto. In fact, the blockchain story is bifurcating, with crypto and all its craziness on one side, and enterprise blockchain on the other. While it may be fun to poke our stick at the former, Intellyx’s focus is on enterprise digital transformation – which means that bona fide blockchain-based business models are a key part of this ongoing story of disruption. Regardless, we receive numerous pitches every day from all manner of blockchain-based companies, from the most serious to the silliest. When we set up a briefing with one of them, we need to quickly determine which camp it belongs in: serious enterprise play or crazy crypto? W... (more)

Containers and Kubernetes allow for code portability across on-premise VMs, bare metal, or multiple cloud provider environments. Yet, despite this portability promise, developers may include configuration and application definitions that constrain or even eliminate application portability. In this session we'll describe best practices for "configuration as code" in a Kubernetes environment. We will demonstrate how a properly constructed containerized app can be deployed to both Amazon and Azure ...

The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. Major trends and emerging technologies – from virtual reality and IoT, to Big Data and algorithms – are helping organizations innovate in the digital era. However, to create real business value, IT must think beyond the ‘what’ of digital transformation to the ‘how’ to harness emerging trends, innovation and disruption. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cl...
