The Internet of Things (IoT) is the most profound change in personal and
enterprise IT since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago.
All major researchers estimate there will be tens of billions devices -
computers, smartphones, tablets, and sensors - connected to the Internet by
2020. This number will continue to grow at a rapid pace for the next several
decades.
With major technology companies and startups seriously embracing IoT
strategies, now is the perfect time to attend @ThingsExpo in Silicon Valley.

Systems of Innovation for Ongoing Digital Transformation
Information technology (IT) advances are transforming the way we innovate in
business, thereby disrupting the old guard and their predictable status-quo.
It’s creating global market turbulence. Industries are converging, and new
opportunities and threats are emerging, like never before.
So, how are savvy chief information officers (CIOs) leading this transition?
Back in 2015, the IBM Institute for Business Value conducted a market study
that included the findings from over 1,800 CIO interviews from around the
globe. The resulting insights are worthy of revisiting today, as we consider
the digital business transformation outlook in 2017.
Introduction to the Torchbearer CIO
CIOs realize the barriers between formerly distinct industries are
collapsing, as organizations in one sector apply their expertise to others ... (more)
Extend User Experience of WebRTC with Unique Sensor Devices
WebRTC is great technology to build your own communication tools. It will be
even more exciting experience it with advanced devices, such as a 360 Camera,
360 microphone, and a depth sensor camera.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Masashi Ganeko, a manager at INFOCOM
Corporation, will introduce two experimental projects from his team and what
they learned from them.
"Shotoku Tamago" uses the robot audition software HARK to track speakers in
360 video of a remote party. "Virtual Teleport" uses a multiple Intel
RealSense Depth Camera to scan 3D and build 3D models in real-time, and
display as hologram in front of remote participants.

Web Security Journal: There's been a flurry of discussion this week among
Internet and Web standards heavy-hitters around WebSocket, the new
communications protocol supported in Chrome 4 and Safari 5. What was the main
issue? Is there some kind of fundamental security vulnerability with the
WebSocket (WS) protocol?
John Fallows: When surfing the Web, our browsers may communicate with Web
servers via HTTP proxies that deliver many benefits, such as providing
previously cached Web content more efficiently than repeatedly contacting the
target server. These proxies may be either explicitly configured at the
browser or they may form part of the general network topology to intercept
the communication path implicitly. Securely encrypted Web communication
cannot be intercepted by such proxies.

One of the most exciting things about the software industry is how fast it
moves. Software is constantly optimizing itself around the state-of-the-art.
Inherent industry bottlenecks change cyclically every five years or so.
Architectures and solutions change too. CPUs too costly? Enter dumb
terminals. Network running slow? Build client/servers. It comes full circle
– the network becomes fast again and thin clients talk to big servers.
Networks become really fast, now you have grids. At the beginning of each of
these paradigm shifts, it’s not always immediately obvious what
we’ll look back on as the brilliant technology decision that carried
the day.
The indisputable force in recent years – open source – has come
to be renowned as the innovation to take on innovation itself. As a direct
result of the transformation of the software indust... (more)
In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010)
being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time
to give my earlier list a complete overhaul.
Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the
Cloud Ecosystem.
I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this
year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and
continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of
enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web

First came Tunisia's "Jasmine Revolution" and now we have the "#Jan25
Uprising" - the world's first revolution named for a Twitter hash tag.
Calling it the "Twitter Revolution" misses the beauty of the hash tag itself,
and besides what would one then call the upcoming social unrest in other Arab
States? So-called "hashtag dates" are already being planned for the Arab
world: Sudan #Jan30, Yemen #Feb3, Syria #Feb5, Algeria #Feb12 and Bahrain
#Feb14.

I am not the only one who argues that "Twitter Revolution" is not the right
term. Ulyses Mejias has written vehemently that "...[I]t is [absurd] to refer
to events in Iran, Tunisia, Egypt and elsewhere as the Twitter Revolution,
the Facebook Revolution, and so on." And he is right. Let me quickly just
give the floor to Mejias, since he in turn is generous enough to note that
things can sometime... (more)
Are you suffering from double vision in your IT? As odd as it sounds, this is
a common occurrence. Line-of-business (LOB) stakeholders often use a
different set of criteria to measure IT than IT uses to measure itself. This
can lead to a kind of "double vision"that can hurt IT prospects. A
cloud-centric IT maturity model is a useful tool for evaluating present IT
capabilities and planning future growth. It is increasingly being used to
establish present and future success criteria for IT in a common language
understood by all parties. In this article, we will discuss three essential
dimensions of IT maturity and how they can be applied to help IT decision
makers achieve their goals.
The Double Vision
Cloud computing has created two major sets of expectations, which are worth a
critical look:
IT-centric View of Cloud: Historically, many CIOs and IT professionals,
