Delivering on Cloud Storage-as-a-Service for a Major Asia Pacific Telco
In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Michael Burley, a Senior Business
Development Executive in IT Services at NetApp, described how NetApp designed
a three-year program of work to migrate 25PB of a major telco's enterprise
data to a new STaaS platform, and then secured a long-term contract to manage
and operate the platform.
This significant program blended the best of NetApp's solutions and services
capabilities to enable this telco's successful adoption of private cloud
storage and launching of virtual storage services to its enterprise market.

Implementing a Well-Behaved Network for Your Cloud
As you move to the cloud, your network should be efficient, secure, and easy
to manage. An enterprise adopting a hybrid or public cloud needs systems and
tools that provide:
Agility: ability to deliver applications and services faster, even in complex
hybrid environments Easier manageability: enable reliable connectivity with
complete oversight as the data center network evolves Greater efficiency:
eliminate wasted effort while reducing errors and optimize asset utilization
Security: implement always-vigilant DNS security

A Deep Dive into the Core Metrics of the Java Virtual Machine
By Eugen Paraschiv
Overview of JVM Metrics
In this article, we'll cover how you can monitor an application that runs on
the Java Virtual Machine by going over some of the critical metrics you need
to track. And, as a monitoring tool, we'll use Stackify Retrace, a full APM
solution.
The application we'll monitor to exemplify these metrics is a real-world Java
web application built using the Spring framework. Users can register, login,
connect their Reddit account and schedule their posts to Reddit.
How JVM Memory Works
There are two important types of JVM memory to watch: heap and non-heap
memory, each of these with its own purpose.
The heap memory is where the JVM stores runtime data represented by allocated
instances. This is where memory for new objects comes from, and is released
when the Garbage Colle... (more)
How often is an environment unavailable due to factors within your project's
control? How often is an environment unavailable due to external factors? Is
the software and hardware in the environment up to date with the target
production systems? How often do you have to resort to manual workarounds due
to an environment?
These are all questions that you should ask yourself if testing environments
are consistently unavailable and affected by outages. Here are three key
metrics that you can track that can help avoid costly downtime.
Metric: Availability and Uptime Percentage
QA and staging environments seldom require the same level of uptime as
production, but tell that to a team of developers working 24/7 on a project
that has an aggressive deadline and you will have a very unhappy team. As a
test environment manager, you know that when a QA system is unavailable, you ... (more)

We just came off of a review of a product that handles both containers and
virtual machines in the same interface. Under the covers, implementation of
containers defaults to LXC, though recently Docker support was added.
When reading online, or searching for information, increasingly we see
“Container Management” products listed as competitors to Docker, when in
reality things like Rocket, LXC/LXD, and Virtualization are Dockers
competitors.
After doing some looking around, we have decided that this shift in how
Docker is perceived in the market is due largely to the fact that it is easy
to set up and begin using. Inevitably, if the Docker install is large enough,
something like Docker Enterprise Edition, Kubernetes, Apache Mesos/DCOS will
be required to container management, but for the entry level, “container
management” has less stringent requirements.
So if yo... (more)

The Four Core Capabilities of DevOps
By Necco Ceresani
DevOps is good for organizations. According to the soon to be released State
of DevOps Report high-performing IT organizations are 2X more likely to
exceed profitability, market share, and productivity goals. But how do they
do it? How do they use DevOps to drive value and differentiate their
companies?
We recently sat down with Nicole Forsgren, CEO and Chief Scientist at DORA
(DevOps Research and Assessment) and lead investigator for the State of
DevOps Report, to discuss the role of measurement in DevOps Success. From
years of research into DevOps operations and culture, Forsgren and her
colleagues have found that success depends on improving two key
outcomes—speed and stability. These, she says, are crucial for driving
improvement in organizational performance and value.
But achieving these outcomes requires... (more)
Harnessing Your Continuous Future in 2018
By Akshita Puram
The Toyota Production System, a world-renowned production system is based on
the "complete elimination of all waste". The "Toyota Way", grounded on
continuous improvement dates to the 1860s. The methodology is widely proven
to be successful yet there are still industries within and tangential to
manufacturing struggling to adopt its core principles:
Jidoka: a process should stop when an issue is identified prevents releasing
defective products Just-in-Time: each process produces only what is needed
for the next process in the continuous flow
The QA Manager Struggle
Similar to Toyota Production System's primary focus on continuous
improvement, quality assurance teams are rethinking their testing processes
and tooling in order to empower their teams to move toward faster, more
reliable, and higher quality softwa... (more)
Monitoring and Observability
By Dawn Parzych
Defining the term ‘monitoring’ is a difficult task considering the
performance space has evolved significantly over the years. Lately, there
has been a shift in the monitoring world, sparking a healthy debate regarding
the definition and purpose of monitoring, through which a new term has
emerged: observability. Some of that debate can be found in blogs
by Charity Majors and Cindy Sridharan.
Many organizations like AirBnB, Twitter, and Stripe are embracing the
observability by creating observability teams or observability engineers.
So what is the difference between monitoring and observability, and how
are they related? Is monitoring a subset of observability, is observability
a subset of monitoring, or are they two terms that mean the same thing?
Performance monitoring is an umbrella term that can include system
monitor... (more)
