Three Invaluable Lessons from Cloud Expo
Just over a week ago I received a long and loud sustained applause for a presentation I delivered at this year's Cloud Expo in Santa Clara. I was extremely pleased with the turnout and had some very good conversations with many of the attendees. Over the next few days I had many more meaningful conversations and was not only happy with the results but also learned a few new things. Here is everything I learned in those three days distilled into three short points.
When trade shows are not a waste of time
I am not very aggressive by nature but my feeling of being a little pushy is directly related to the situation I am put into. Although I am all in favor of having a presence at events, conferences and tradeshows and working like a magnet to attract the people who are looking for you, I am also avid about getting out of my comfort zone and seeking people who I want to speak with. Having said that, some of my best conversations have been with people that I sought and hunted down. Being able to derive maximum value from any industry event is about maximizing your presence through meaningful conversations and sometimes that happens outside the booth rather than at your booth. Next time, maximize the value you receive from industry events by planning a strategy of seeking out specific people, and then seeking them out. Make clear goals of meeting a minimum number of people and get on with it.
When audiences engage
It is simply impossible to deliver a presentation that hits a home run without knowing your audiences. I have seldom gone into a presentation where I was unaware of what the audience was looking for. Whether you are speaking to a sales and marketing crowd or nannies without borders, identify at least three key points that will make an impact on the mindset of the audience. Your content can be an eye opener, a reflective piece or a motivational blaster. Make sure you have identified the highest impact course, then put the overall context of the conversation in perspective. The first 60-90 seconds of your presentation are the most important as they set the tone for your entire session, followed by the closing. Focus on both of these as much as you can, without sacrificing the main content and you are sure to have an impactful conversation.
When the system succeeds
I will not call it a process problem, but instead a system problem. If you have models and processes in place and are not utilizing them to their full extent, you are easily wasting a chunk of your time and effort. I had a few great discussions about this point and the simple takeaway is that "the reason why models, methodologies and processes don't work is simply because they never get executed the way they should be." Yes of course there may be something unique about your work or a specific case but the reason why standards exist is because of the pure value they deliver. People often complain they tried but their process did not work or it didn't bring in the right results. I would suggest mapping your process with your need and making sure it's the right process. Make your processes into a system that you follow. The system is your friend and processes make the system succeed.
I learned a lot more at this year's Cloud Expo. Last but not least the mere fact that cloud-powered technologies are growing in multiple ways and more than anything else there is a need for us all to work together to create an ecosystem that supports growth, better practices and standards. If you were at Cloud Expo, please share your story and let us know what it that you learned.
20th International Cloud Expo, taking place June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY, will feature technical sessions from a rock star conference faculty and the leading industry players in the world.
Cloud computing is now being embraced by a majority of enterprises of all sizes. Yesterday's debate about public vs. private has transformed into the reality of hybrid cloud: a recent survey shows that 74% of enterprises have a hybrid cloud strategy. Meanwhile, 94% of enterprises are using some form of XaaS - software, platform, and infrastructure as a service.
