Paramount Communications and Chris Craft Industries have won a skirmish in the battle to launch a fifth broadcast network, reaching an agreement Wednesday to sign on Chicago's WPWR-Channel 50.
The move is a blow to the rival WB network, led by Time Warner and Tribune Co., which also had courted Channel 50. It increases the likelihood that Tribune-owned WGN-Channel 9 - initially billed as a backup outlet for the network - will be pressed into service to carry prime-time programs during WB's first year.
But WB still could affiliate with WGBO-Channel 66, another Chicago-based independent station, a Tribune spokesman said.
"We would have obviously preferred if WPWR had gone with WB," Tribune spokesman Robert Carr said Wednesday. …
