The Constitution

The new constitution is made up of four documents which inter-relate:

The Memorandum and Articles of Association deal with the incorporation of the Society as a charity in law, and the Governance Framework deals with matters relating to employment and financial management.

The Laws are the bulk of the rules governing the Society, and the most relevant to members - here are detailed the Officers and their duties, Election rules, the complaints and appeal procedures, and so on. The Regulations are day-to-day rules made by Standing Committee including things like debate rules, the guest policy, and appointed positions.

The Special Members' Business Meeting on 28th November, 2009 considered and approved the Laws and Regulations and approved the adoption by appointed persons of the Memorandum and Articles of Association and the second-tier document, currently called the Governance Framework. Therefore, please note that the versions of the Memorandum and Articles of Association and the Governance Framework presented above may change slightly between now and the incorporation; they are presented here in order to provide a context in which members may read the Laws.

Questions regarding the new constitution can be sent by members to [email protected], who if necessary can refer the matter to the Constitutional Committee.
