I’m setting up a few new machines, and needed to check out some networking issues – so I went off to Wireshark.Org to download a copy when I discovered a treasure trove of videos and slides from the recent SharkFest conference held in June in Palo Alto. It sounds like it was an interesting conference – the videos I’ve watched look OK.

More Network Protocol Training
As I noted in two recent blog articles (here and here), Network Protocol Specialists are running a series of WireShark Quick Start webcasts. The second session is to be held tomorrow, December 3 at 10:-00 PDT (Or 18:00 in the UK and 19:00 CET).
This second web cast covers Using Display Filters and Long Term Captures. Both are interesting topics. Go to the web signup page to register for this event.
I am hoping that, like the last session, that this web cast is recorded for later download since I can’t make the webcast! To get the download link for the last session (and presumably the link for downloading the 2nd session), send email to: [email protected].

More on Network Protocol Training
As I noted earlier this week, NPS were running a Network Protocol webcast. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend my self as I got stuck in traffic and ended up getting to the web cast a few minutes after it ended. But good news – the webcast is available for download. On their web-site, it now clearly states: “Contact us at [email protected] to view a recorded copy of this webcast.” So if you missed it, you can get access to see it.
There’s another web cast this week Using Display Filters Effectively and Long Term Captures. It looks to be useful but I know I can’t make it home to watch (what a pesky thing work can be at times!). Being able to get the download will be useful.
Thanks to the NPS guys for this cool training.

It’s a bit short notice, but I see that Network Protocol Specialists are running a series of free Wireshark Quick start web casts. The first webcast starts TODAY at 18:00 UK time (10:00 Pacific time), and it lasts for an hour. Today’s webcast covers cover analyzer placement, basic capture filters, and displaying the packets.
For more details on the webcasts, see: Network Protocol Specialists » Training and to register for today’s webcast go to the registration page.

Wireshark - a new name, but the software's the same
Last Thursday, I resigned from QA and with that resignation, I now feel I am now able to blog again. Horray! I'll be posting more deails about my next job during the coming week.
I was searching this morning and discovered that that well known Ethteral protocol analyser has changed its name to Wireshark. While the is new, the software is the same (and it continues to improve!).
Wireshark's powerful features make it a great tool for all serious network admins. I used earlier version in the development of my TCP/IP books. It's a great product all the more so since it's free to use. For more information about Wireshark, see the FAQ.
Wireshark was written by networking experts around the world, and is an example of the power of open source. It runs on Windows, Linux, UNIX, and other platforms. The latest version 0.99.2 was released in mid-July and contains a number of fixes plus new features. The updates also include a number of fixes to potential security issues. New features include improvements to the dissectors (protocol analyssers). This version also includes support for new protocls (e.g Bluetooth, Cisco WIDS, TiVo, etc) plus updatesto a large number of protocols.
You can download the latest windows version as well as full source code from the Wireshark site.
