DESIGN OF RETAINING
WALLS Prepared by: YSP

Retaining wall

 A structures designed to restrain soil to unnatural

slopes

Prepared by: YSP

Retaining wall
 A structure designed and constructed to resist the
lateral pressure of soil when there is a targeted
change in soil properties and ground elevation (e.g.
excavation or imposing of extra loads/construction)

On top of the
slope

On toe of the
slope

Design of retaining wall

 3 main steps:
 1. Stability analysis
 Check for resistance to overturning
 Check for resistance to sliding
 2. Bearing pressure analysis

 3. Member design and analysis

Prepared by: YSP

Design of retaining wall
 1. Stability analysis (ULS)
 Check for resistance to overturning
- Critical when Phorizontal >>> Pvertical
- Partial factor of safety:
- for overturning moment about toe of wall (γ): 1.1 (earth
pressure) and 1.5 (surcharge pressure)
- for restraining moment: 0.9 (permanent load)
- Condition: restraining moment > overturning moment
- 0.9 Gkx + 0.9Vkq > γHky

Design of retaining wall
 1. Stability analysis (ULS)
 Check for resistance to sliding
- Friction between the underside of base and ground
- Partial factor of safety:
- for sliding force (γ): 1.35 (earth pressure) and 1.5 (surcharge
pressure)
- for frictional resistance: 1.0 (permanent load)
- Condition: frictional resisting force > sliding force
- μ(1.0Gk + 1.0Vk) > γHk
heel

- If sliding force > resisting force, provide a heel (extra friction

from passive earth pressure

Design of retaining wall
 2. Bearing pressure analysis (ULS)
 Check for the size of the base (like foundation)
 M/N = eccentricity, e < D/6
 Pmax = N/D + 6M/D2
 Pmin = N/D - 6M/D2

 3. Member design and analysis

 Wall, base, heel
