System unit
A case that contains electronic components of the
computer used to process data.
 Hard Drive – The central storage of data on a
computer,
 Random Access Memory (RAM) – It is a system memory
- stores and quickly access data( if Power turned off,
all information is lost),
 Processor (CPU) Central Processing Unit – It is referred
as the Central Brain of the computer; which is
responsible for all operations that is carried out on
the computer,
 Video Card - Converts the image in the computer’s
memory into a video signal for the monitor,
 Sound card – (attached to PCI slot on a Motherboard)
to enable the computer to input, process, and deliver
sound.
Two main components on the motherboard

• Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Also called a processor, which carries out instructions that tell a
computer what to do,
• Memory (RAM – Random Access Memory)
Temporary holding place for data and instructions
Storage

• Holds data, instructions, and information for future use,

Storage media
Physical material on which data, instruction, and information are
stored
Storage device
Records and retrieves items to and from a storage
Storage device

Floppy disk
• Thin, circular flexible disk enclosed in a
rigid plastic shell
• A Zip disk looks similar but has much
greater storage capability
Hard disk
• Provide much greater storage capacity
than a floppy disk or Zip disk
• Housed inside the system

• Flat, round, portable metal disc

• CD-ROM
• CM-RW
Capacity: 673-768 MB

• DVD-ROM
• DVD+RW
Capacity: 4.7 – 17.1 GB
