Read the title of the speech to understand background
information
Listen to the phrases that lead to new sections of the speech
Pay attention to keywords and how they are paraphrased in
the speech
Identify information needed to complete notes or
sentences
Before listening, it’s very important to read through
the notes, and think about what type of information/
word or number are needed (e.g. a date, a distance,
an address, a noun, etc).
Look at the grammatical format of the notes.
These will tell you if you need to include words such
as articles or prepositions in your answers.
