Angle of Elevation and Depression

The document discusses angle of elevation and depression. Angle of elevation is the upward angle between the horizontal and an object, while angle of depression is the downward angle. Examples are provided to demonstrate how to use trigonometric ratios like tangent to calculate distances or heights given an angle of elevation or depression and one other piece of information.

ANGLE OF ELEVATION AND

DEPRESSION
Objective:
What is Angle of Elevation and Depression?

Angle of elevation is the angle between the horizontal upward

towards the object.

Angle of depression is the angle between the horizontal

downward towards the object.
Line of sight

Line of sight is an imaginary

line that connects to the eye of
an observer to the object
being observe.
Angle of Elevation

The "upward" angle from the

horizontal to a line of sight
from the observer to some
point of interest.
Angle of Depression

The “downward" angle from the

horizontal to a line of sight from
the observer to some point of
interest.
Examples:
1. A tower is 15.24m high. At a certain distance away from the tower, an observer
determines that the angle of elevation to the top of it is 41°. How far is the
observer from the base of the tower?

Illustration:

15.24

x
Illustration:
To solve for the distance of the
observer from the tower, let’s use
trigonometric ratio.

15.24 y
Let x be the distance of the
observer from the distance of the
tower.

x
Illustration:

Given:
Sin 41° =
Cos 41° =
Tan 41° =
15.24 y

Identify the correct trigonometric

ratio to use. To solve for x, use tan
x function.

*Let x – distance of man from tower/side adjacent

y - hypotenuse
Solution:

Tan 41° = Given

=x Transpose to the
other side the
numerator.
15.24
=x Use scientific
calculator to
compute for tan 41
then divide.
x
x = 17.26
Therefore, the distance of observer
to the tower is 17.26m.

Examples:
2. The angle of depression from the top of the castle to a boat
is 25°. If the boat is 350m from the castle, how tall is the
castle?
Illustration:
Given:
Sin 25° =
Cos 25° =
Tan 25° =

Use tangent function to solve for

the height of castle.

*Let x – height of castle

y - hypotenuse
Solution:
Tan 25° =
350 (Tan 25°) = x
350 (0.4663) = x
x = 163. 21m

The height of the castle is

163.21m.
Examples:
3. A man flies kite with a 100 ft. string. The angle elevation of
the string is 52°. How high of the kite is to the ground?

Illustration:

52°
*Let a - distance of kite from the
ground/opposite side
b – side adjacent
Given:
Sin 52° =
Cos 52° =
Tan 52° =

Use sin function to solve for a

(distance of kite from the ground).
Solution:
Sin 52° =
100 (sin 52°) = a
100 (0.7880) = a
a= 78.80

The distance of kite from the

ground is 78.80 ft.
Examples:
4. A man on duty at the top of a watch tower can see his friend
on the ground with 40° angle of depression. If the watch
tower is 45m high, how far is his friend to the base of the
tower?

Illustration:

40°
Given:
Sin 40° =
Cos 40° =
Tan 40° =

Use tangent function, to solve for

x.
40°
Solution:
Tan 40° =

=x
x = 53.63

40°
The distance of man from the
tower is 53.63m.
