Article of The Week - Jameson Brown

The document discusses the cognitive, academic, social, and emotional benefits of recess for students. It notes that recess allows children to develop intellectually through hands-on experiences, helps them transition between classroom tasks, and benefits their cognitive performance afterward. Recess also enables important social interactions and helps students learn communication, problem-solving, and self-control skills. While some may argue recess is not important, the document states any activity during recess is beneficial and it should not be withheld for academic or punitive reasons, as students need breaks to support their development.

The Crucial Role of

Recess in School
Benefits
of recess
Cognitive & Academically Benefits

Children develop intellectual constructs and cognitive understanding

through interactive, manipulative experiences.

It is known that children do better with transitions when they are shifting
from 1 tasks to another when they’re best served by unstructured breaks

Any type of activity at recess will benefit the cognitive performance

afterward in the classroom

Benefits
of recess
Social & Emotional benefits

Recess is a major chunk out of the day where the students are part
taking in peer interactions especially is its not practiced during the
other parts of the day

Students learn communication skills like negation, sharing, and

problem solving with other peers in the classroom

Students also learn self control when playing together during recess
which usually tends to be a longer period

Why some may disagree

I don’t think anyone would disagree that recess has its benefits, I think others
would disagree on the importance of recess. I look at it the perspective of given
the benefits it has for students I think it needs to be become more of consistent
part of the schedule rather than used as a reward.

A lot of teachers use recess as an award when students are “acting out” however,
they most likely just genuinely need a brain break
Beyond the playground
It is a known fact that students are starting to experience anxiety, depression, etc. at a younger
age than usually. Given the higher rise of how we asses students in the classroom based on there
performance, recess provides necessary breaks in the day to help nourish a child's social,
emotional, physical, and cognitive development.

I really like how it says in the article that recess can be considered a child's personal time out of
the school day and should NOT be withheld for academic or punitive reasons. Showing our
students that we value their personal time will help them value the time in the classroom more
that is dedicated to working on writing, reading, math, etc.

Why I choose this topic
I am defiantly an advocate for students' mental health, and I think that plays
apart in recess. We see so many students' theses days dealing with anxiety,
depression, etc. in school at an early age so making sure we know the benefits
of the breaks we’re giving them it important. As future teachers we want to
make sure we’re setting them up for the best possible educational setting we
can regardless if that is giving them weekly test or making sure they get two
recesses a day it all plays apart in a students’ overall performances
