Data Management

Data management involves collecting, storing, organizing, protecting, verifying, and processing essential data and making it available to an organization. Good data management increases productivity by making it easier for employees to find, understand, validate, and share the information they need to do their jobs. There are four types of information: factual, analytical, subjective, and objective. Factual information deals solely with facts while analytical information interprets facts; subjective information expresses opinions from one viewpoint; and objective information presents all sides of an argument.

DATA MANAGEMENT

DATA MANAGEMENT
• Data management involves collecting, storing, organizing, protecting,
verifying, and processing essential data and making it available to
your organization.
IMPORTANCE
• Data management is important because the data your organization
creates is a very valuable resource. The last thing you want to do is
spend time and resources collecting data and business intelligence,
only to lose or misplace that information
The Benefits of Good Data Management

• Data Management Will Increase Your Productivity

• Good data management will make your organization more productive.
On the flip side, poor data management will lead to your organization
being very inefficient. Good data management:
• Makes it easier for your employees to find and understand the
information that they need to do their job.
• Allows your staff to easily validate results or conclusions they may have.
• Provides the structure for information to be easily shared with others
• Allows information to be stored for future reference and easy retrieval.
TYPES OF INFORMATION
• knowing what type of information you need will help you decide which sources to use.  There are four
types of information:
• Factual
• Factual information is information that solely deals with facts. It is short, non-explanatory, and rarely
gives in-depth background on a topic.
• Example: George A. Romero directed Night of the Living Dead.
• Example Factual Resources: Encyclopedias, Almanacs, Government Resources, Statistics

• Analytical
• Analytical information is the interpretation of factual information.  What does the factual information
mean?  What does it imply?  This is the type of information that researchers generate in their studies.
• Example: According to a 2016 survey, pests are more frightening than zombies. 1
• Example Analytical Resources: Scholarly Journals. Academic and Scholarly Books. Library
Databases. Some scholarly websites.
• Subjective
• Subjective information is information from only one point of view. Opinions are
always subjective.
• Example: Z-Nation was an entertaining show that should have never been
canceled.
• Example Subjective Resources: Websites, Blogs, Social Media, Non-
scholarly Books and Journals. Book Reviews.

• Objective
• Objective information is information that is understood from multiple
viewpoints and presents all sides of an argument.
• Example: While April enjoys zombie films, many people find them violent,
pointless, and unnecessarily gory.
• Example Objective Resources: Books, Journal Articles, Newspapers, Library
Databases including Opposing Viewpoints and Facts on File.
