READING COMPREHENSION TOEFL
 There are about 50-60 questions (55 minutes)
 This reading will cosist of 3-5 passages
 Main Ideas, Details, Inferences, Essential
Information, Sentence Insertion, Vocabulary,
Rhetorical Purpose and Overall Ideas.
READING STRATEGY ON TOEFL
 Read the first and last sentences of the passage
to establish the topic and main idea
 Skim the passage for the key concepts and
vocabulary
 Read the questions following the passage to find
out what kinds of information you are looking
for .(Do not read the options)
 Answer the question,Use key words or phrases
in the question to scan the passage for the
correct answer.
BUILDING GOOD READING SKILLS :
 Skimming means reading quickly for general
meaning .It is commonly used to find out about
the topic, the main idea and general
organizationof the texts.
 Scanning means knowing what information you
need to find before you read.It is commonly
used for to look for a fact or a detail or particular
vocabulary word.
MAIN IDEAS
IT IS RELATIVELY EASY TO FIND THE MAIN IDEAS BY STUDYING TOPIC
SENTENCES, WHICH ARE PROBABLY FOUND AT BEGINNING OF EACH
PARAGRAPH.

 For the examples of questions are :


1. What is the main topic of the passage?
2. What does the passage mainly discuss?
3. What is the subject of the passage?
4. What is the primary topic of the passage?
5. What is the main theme in the passage
6. Which of the following would be the best title?
7. What is the author’s main point?
HOW TO IDENTIFYING MAIN IDEA?

1. Do not read the whole texts


2. Pay Attention to the first and
last sentence
3. Find Keywords
HOW TO RESPOND
To define....
To relate....
To discuss.....
To propose.....
To illustrate.....
To support the idea that...
To distinguish between .... And ....
To compare ... And ...

 4. Possesive adjectives : its, their
