Interpretation of Petrographic Analysis (ALS Lab) of MME Coal, Supply of UMM

- The petrographic analysis of MME coal from UMM mines found that it has a low free swelling index of 0, making it unsuitable for coke manufacture. - The vitrinite reflectance analysis found the coal to be thermally immature with a mean maximum reflectance of 0.34%, ranking it lower than sub-bituminous coal. - The maceral analysis identified the main macerals as 85.7% telovitrinite with remnant plant cell structure and 14.3% detrovitrinite with no cell structure.

Petrographic analysis (ALS

Lab) of MME coal, supply
of UMM
Date of Visit: Oct.15-16, 2018
Formation of Macerals
Maceral Analysis
• Coal is made up a macerals. MACERALS are microscopic
residues of decomposed plants materials.
• Microscopically, basic coal constituent is MACERAL
which is synonymous to minerals in inorganic rocks
• Macerals include vitrinite, inertinite and liptinite
Free Swelling Index
Free Swelling Index = “0”

MME Coal (Low CV) is not suitable for coke

Remarks:
 Free Swelling Index is a measure of increase in the volume of coal
when heated with the exclusion air.
 Coal with low free swelling index (0-2) are not suitable for coke
manufacture.
