PHILIPPINE

LITERATURE: WRITING
IN THE REGIONS
View
The Eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in Pampanga was one of the most
cataclysmic events in recent history. It has been called the
second largest Volcanic eruption in the modern era. The eruption
literally changed the landscape of Central Luzon. Rivers were re-
routed, dam built, and many Kapampangan people were faced
with a hometown that changed literally overnight.
Thousands were affected by the eruption. The disaster
changed the lives of so many people, and is so doing, the context
of these people were changes as well.
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Context is “the
collection of interrelated conditions in which something exists or
occurs.”
Therefore, context is what is around us , which influences us
just as we influence it. Writers have used context to create
various forms of written work such as poetry, fiction, drama, and
essays. In the case of most Filipinos, their region also determines
their context.
Essay is simply “a short piece of writing on a particular
subject.” According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, which
can lead to misconception that it is easy to write. As long as it is
short and it is about a subject, can be considered as essay.
Essay can be more expressive and very pragmatic.
The essay becomes Literary, as the Merriam-Webster
dictionary defines it, “written works that are considered to be
very good and to have lasting importance.”
The eruption Of Mt. Pinatubo, and its effects on a particular
persons life, are the subject tackled by the essay of John Jack
Wigley. In it, he uses a distinctive style and tone to relate his
memories to us. His style in writing makes his essay unique, and
turns an experience of so many into a singular written work.
Who are Regional Writers? What are Regional
Literatures?
Regional writers like Wigley are very clear about their
origins, and these origins are easily seen in their works.
Pampango literature is perhaps a case in point where the writers
are indeed struggling. Kapampangan culture became heavily
influenced by Spain. When Americans established military bases
in the region the Kapampangans again embraced foreign
influences. The effect of these influences was that, plenty of
Spanish works translated into Pampango.
For example, Lino G. Dizon’s Pasyon Ding Talapagobra
used the traditional pasyon but also used the vernacular to
discuss the injustices suffered by the working class farmers.
Lourdes Vidal, who discussed Kampangan Literature in
Filipinos Writing: Philippine Literature From the Regions ,
expressed pessimism that the region would be able to produce
new work unless it sees new writers step in with a clear notion of
their regionality and are able to speak with clear voices to
contribute to the country
How Does Style and Tone Affect an Essay?
One way by which writers are able to turn their stories into
unique style. Style can mean a unique way of expressing oneself.
An essay written in a particular style would make the essay
different from the others. In an essay, creating an individual style
will mean the writer would have to use his/her skills in writing and
to produce unique effect to the reader.
Tone in writing is also very important in helping the writer
convey meaning to the reader. How the writer feels about a
particular person, idea or object and how he thinks in his essay.
Tone, then, carries more than just feelings, but
can direct a reader to meaning.
