Emergency Lighting Central Battery System: Santhi Mathai

The document discusses emergency lighting central battery systems which provide emergency and exit lighting from a centralized battery bank. A central battery system uses batteries to provide backup power through inverters or contactors. It must provide a minimum of 3 hours of backup power according to local regulations. The document outlines the components, design considerations, and sizing of central battery systems.

Important Points to note about CBS

CBS are Passive Standby devices connected to the mains as opposed to the UPS which are on Active Standby connected to the loads As per the BS5266 Pt. 9 EN 50171, in the event of a mains failure, a CBS should have a delay time of min 0.4s in order to notify the occupants that the mains have failed Local regulations require the CBS to have a back up of 3 hours at least

Non-maintained Luminaire Maintained Luminaire Converted Luminaire

Altogether called Slave Luminaire since fed by a CBS. Uniform ratio of 40:1 from max to min illuminated areas. Escape routes must have at least 1lux

Additional Emergency lighting should be provided in the following areas : 1. 2. 5. 6. 7. Lift Rooms Escalators Generator, Control or Plant rooms Covered car parks External escape routes

Central Battery Design: Size of System

Make a list of all the luminaires to be connected and note the quantity of fittings of each type. Establish the electrical supply details for each luminaire type (the circuit watts and the circuit VA) Multiply each of these by the quantity of luminaires Find the total Circuit wattage requirement and the total circuit VA requirement. Add an allowance (recommend a minimum of 20%) for voltage drop due to cabling or future expansion Select a unit from the product list opposite which is capable of supplying both the required VA rating and the required wattage rating.

Conclusion

CBS works in conjunction with Fire Engineering Systems Depending on the building layout, a modular approach help reduce cost. E.g. a 100kVA CBS is more expensive than a 5x10kVA CBS
