Delivery Strategies
After studying this Unit, you will be able to :
▪ describe the following terms -synchronous learning,
asynchronous learning, blended learning, and flipped
learning.
▪ understand how software, such as learning management
systems (LMS) and learning experience platforms (LXP) help
us deliver online learning.
▪ learn how the design and delivery of online learning is
different from classroom teaching.
Implement Phase
This is the phase in which you teach a topic,
conduct a session, or deliver training. The
implement phase may be rendered in any one
of these formats offline, in the form of physical
classroom instruction, completely online using
the Internet, or a mix of the two delivery
methods.

TYPES OF ONLINE LEARNING
Synchronous Learning
The teacher may address the group in one or more of the following
ways:
▪ Explain using a combination of video and interactive whiteboard
▪ Explain and present using presentation software
▪ Pose questions using third party interactivity tools or those
available in the video conferencing software, such as Poll or Chat
▪ Conduct group activities using collaboration tools, such as
Breakout Rooms available in the video conferencing software

TYPES OF ONLINE LEARNING
In Asynchronous Learning, the teacher, the learner,
and the other students are not engaged in the learning
process at the same time. There is no real-time interaction
with other people. This is also known as self-paced learning.
Asynchronous learning is more flexible than synchronous
learning as the learners can go through the learning material
at their own pace and time. However, this type of learning
assumes that the learner is adequately motivated.

TYPES OF ONLINE LEARNING
Flipped Classroom
Asynchronous learning is adapted in K-12 by adding a little bit of
structure to self-paced learning. This is popularly known as flipped
classroom. As the term flipped implies, the typical classroom methodology
of "teach-homework-feedback" is turned around to homework-discuss-
feedback“. Direct instruction is presented through pre-recorded videos or
presentations made available online, which students go through prior to
coming to the class. The classroom time is used for delving and exploring
the content in depth through activities and discussions. The idea behind
the flipped classroom is to ensure that students actively participate in the
learning process and in knowledge construction.

TYPES OF ONLINE LEARNING
Blended Learning
The mix of the two modes - online and classroom-is popularly referred to
as blended learning. The features and essence of blended learning is
captured well in the following definition:
"The term blended learning is used to describe a solution that combines
several different delivery methods, such as collaboration software, Web-
based courses, electronic performance support systems (EPSS), and
knowledge management practices. Blended learning is also used to
describe learning that mixes various event-based activities, including face-
to-face classrooms, live e-learning, and self-paced learning”.
