Answer all questions

Read Source A and answer the questions that follow.

Source A:

A major scandal erupted in 2009 when a national newspaper revealed

that MPs had been wrongly claiming expenses. The story began when a
journalist obtained details of MPs’ expenses. It was shown that some MPs
were cheating by claiming false expenses. This showed the ability of the
press to investigate the actions of politicians and is an example of how
freedom of the press is important for democracy.

15 Using Source A and your own knowledge, describe the reasons why
freedom of the press is important in a democracy.

Read Source B and answer the question that follows. Examiner Only
Marks Remark

Source B:

In 2015, Labour MP Julie Cooper’s Private Members’ Bill to give free

hospital parking to carers was stopped in the House of Commons. The bill
ran out of time because a Conservative MP spoke for 93 minutes in order to
deliberately use up the time allowed. This is one of the ways that MPs can
affect legislation.

17 Using Source B and your own knowledge, explain how individual MPs can
influence legislation.

Marks Remark

Source C:

Northern Ireland has a population of 1.8 million people and has 90 MLAs.
Each MLA represents approximately 20 000 constituents. This is an
important function of all elected representatives and a good MLA will deal
with a wide range of constituency matters from week to week. Each MLA has
a constituency office which can help constituents with problems and
give advice.

18 Using Source C and your own knowledge, explain the ways MLAs can
represent their constituents.
