BME 101 Tutorial 2

This document is a tutorial for B Tech CSE 2022 batch focusing on the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, specifically on stress and strain. It includes various problems related to calculating forces, extensions, and moduli of elasticity for different mechanical scenarios. Each question is designed to assess the understanding of mechanical properties and behaviors of materials under load.

Tutorial #02 [UNIT 1]
Topic: Stress & strain
ROLL NO.; All Students
Q.NO. QUESTION Marks CO PI BL
A member ABCD is subjected to point loads P1, P2, P3 & P4 as shown in the
figure given below. Calculate the force P3 necessary for equilibrium if P1= 120
kN, P2= 220 kN, and P4= 160 kN. Distance AB = 0.75 m, BC = 1 m and CD =
1.2 m. Determine also the net change in length of the member. Take modulus of
elasticity E= 200 GN/m2.
1 10 01 1.4.1 K2

The steel flat shown in the figure below has a uniform thickness of 20 mm,
under an axial load of 100 kN, its extension is found to be 0.21 mm. determine
the young’s modulus of the material.

2 10 01 1.4.1 K2

Find the extension of the bar shown in figure under the axial load of 25kN.

3 10 01 1.4.1 K2

For the tapering bar of circular cross-section which is subjected to point loads
as shown. The section AB has a uniform diameter of 60 mm and for the section
CD, the uniform diameter is 300 mm. determine load P3 for the equilibrium and
net change in the length of the bar. Take modulus of elasticity of the bar
material as E = 200 Gpa.
4 10 01 1.4.1 K2

A member ABCD of uniform diameter 200 mm has been subjected to point

5 load s as shown in figure. Determine the net change in the length of the bar. 10 01 1.4.1 K4
Take modulus of elasticity of the bar material as E = 200 GN/m2.
A steel bar 2m long 20 mm wide and 15 mm thick is subjected to a tensile load
6 of 30 kn. Find the increase in volume if the poison’s ratio is 0.25 and young’s 10 01 1.4.1 K4
modulus is 200GPa.
A stepped bar ABCD consist of three-part AB, BC, CD such that AB is 300 mm
long and 20 mm diameter, BC is 400 mm long and 30 mm diameter and CD is
7 200 mm long and 40 mm diameter. it was observed that the stepped bar 10 01 1.4.1 K4
undergoes a deformation of 0.42 mm, when it was subjected to a compressive
load P. find the value of P, if E = 200 GPa
It is required to punch 20 mm diameter hole in a 15 mm thick steel plate.
8 Presuming that ultimate shear stress of mild steel is 350 N/mm2, make calculation 10 01 1.4.1 K4
for the force required to punch the hole and the compressive stress on the punch.
A 3 m long rod has cross sectional area that tapers uniformly from 50mm
diameter to 30mm diameter. When an axial load of 50 kN is applied to it, the
9 extension measured over its length is stated to be 0.3635 mm. determine modulus 10 01 1.4.1 K4
of elasticity for the rod material, further make calculation for the bulk modulus
and shear modulus if the Poisson’s ratio is 0.25.
A circular rod of 100 mm diameter and 500 mm length is subjected to a tensile
10 force of 1000 kN. Determine the modulus of rigidity, bulk modulus, and change 10 01 1.4.1 K2
in volume if Poisson’s ratio is 0.3 and young modulus = 2 x 105 N/mm2.
