Report on Learning Plan for

English 8 – Fourth Quarter

Overview

This learning plan is designed for English 8 students in


their fourth grading period. The focus is on journalistic
writing, where students develop skills in using grammatical
structures, logical connectors, and different writing styles
in news, opinion, and feature articles. The unit spans 12
days and integrates technology, collaborative learning, and
real-world applications.
Learning Standards

Content Standard:
Students will understand South and West Asian literature as
expressions of philosophical and religious beliefs. They will also
analyze various journalistic text types and apply grammatical
structures such as:
Active and passive voice
Direct and reported speech
Past and perfect tenses
Logical connectors
Performance Standard: Students will demonstrate their
learning by composing a variety of journalistic texts, applying
proper grammar, structure, and citation. They will deliver a
memorized oral speech incorporating journalistic elements.

Learning Competencies:

By the end of the unit, students will:


- Use *active and passive voice* effectively in news writing.
- Apply *past and perfect tenses* in journalistic writing.
- Utilize *direct and reported speech* in composing articles.
- Integrate *logical connectors* for coherence and emphasis.
Teaching Strategies and Activities

Week 1: Introduction to Journalism & Grammar

Day 1: Introduction to Journalism PowerPoint

Day 3-4: Grammar Focus – Past and Perfect Tenses / Active &
Passive Voice Interactive discussions on how past and perfect
tenses function in news writing.
Activities:
- Sentence rewriting for clarity and correctness. - Role-playing
dialogue using active and passive voice. - Peer evaluation of
sentence revisions.
Week 2: Writing & Editing News Articles

Day 5-6: Direct and Reported Speech in Journalism Video


analysis: students transcribe and convert statements from direct
to indirect speech.
Paired interviews to practice speech conversion.
PowerPoint presentation on the role of speech in journalistic
writing.

Day 7-8: Logical Connectors in Writing Interactive activity: “The


Missing Link”—students complete an article using logical connectors.
Group exercises applying connectors in news, opinion, and feature
articles.
Online quiz via Edmodo to assess understanding.
Day 9: Writing Opinion Articles Using Social Media as a Case
Study*Discussion on social media’s pros and cons.
Video analysis and debate on social media’s impact.
Students write an opinion article on technology, school
uniforms, or the K-12 curriculum.

Week 3: Final Writing and Publication


Day 10-11: Feature Writing and Human-Interest Stories- Students
analyze human-interest articles from websites like Humans of
New York. - Creation of *word webs* identifying key human-
interest angles in feature writing. - Writing a feature article based
on a *real-life interview* with a classmate.
Day 12: Compilation and Publishing - Students finalize their news, opinion, and
feature articles. - Collaboration in groups to create a four-page newspaper
spread using MS Publisher or Google Docs.
Peer evaluation and final submission.

4. Assessment and Final Output
