What is a Diary?
A diary is a personal record of events, thoughts, and feelings, typically arranged by date.
It can be a handwritten journal or a digital log. Diaries can serve as a space for self-
reflection, emotional processing, and creative expression.

Why to write a Diary:

Keeping a diary is an incredible method to record your development and self-improvement.
More passages will permit you to think back and see what has changed over the long run.
It can also help you channel your feelings or experiences in a safe environment as you would
not share it with anybody. The diary is only for your benefit.

1. Date and Greeting:

 Date: Begin with the current date (March 22, 2025).
 Greeting: Use a personal greeting like "Dear Diary"
 Use past tense
 End with a signature i.e. your name.

2. Recount the Day's Events:

 Chronological Order: Describe the events of the day in the order they happened.
 Use First Person: Use pronouns like "I," "me," "my" to show that you are writing
about yourself.
 Be Specific: Include details about the events, people, and places you encountered.

3. Express Your Thoughts and Feelings:

 Be Personal: Share your emotions, opinions, and reactions to the events.
 Use Vivid Language: Use descriptive words and phrases to bring your writing to life.

 Reflect on the Day: Summarize your experiences and what you learned or felt.

4. Structure and Style:

 Conversational Tone: Write as if you are talking to a close friend.
 Clear and Concise: Use simple language and avoid unnecessary jargon.
 Maintain a Natural Flow: Let your thoughts flow naturally, without forcing a rigid
structure.

Sample: It was the first day of your new school. Make a diary entry describing your
first-day experience in your new school.

Dear Diary,
Today was my first day of school. I was very excited, at the same time, a bit nervous to go
the school. The school was very big and my classroom very spacious. Since it was the first
day of my school, I wanted to create a good impression on teachers.

So, I sat on the first bench. I was asked to give self-introduction to fellow mates in the
classroom. I was embarrassed, but somehow gave a short introduction about myself. Then
one girl named, Tina approached me and asked a few things like where I stay, from which
place I am. The conversation with Tina seemed to be interrogative but comfortable. During
our lunch break she shared her food with me and so did I. We finish our lunch in 10 minutes
so she could show me the whole school. She showed me our playground and library. They
were huge and well maintained. My library had so many books I could never finish if I
started today. And the playground had a football and a tennis court. We also have space for
other sports. We also have a larger swimming pool. I can’t wait for my swimming lessons. It
enjoyed the tour.

Overall, the first-day experience in my new school was interesting. For now, I consider Tina
as my best friend in the school.
Wishing myself good luck!

Practice questions:
1. Your class recently went on a trip to a large recycling centre. Your teacher has asked you
to write a diary entry on the trip. In your diary entry say what you learned from the trip and
suggest how it could be improved if it is repeated next year.
Here are two comments from other students in your class:
The trip was too short – we didn’t manage to visit every part of the centre.
It made me much more aware of the importance of recycling.
2. Imagine you managed to stop something that could have been dangerous to people from
happening. Write a diary entry about it.
You should consider:
what the situation was
what could have happened
what you did
how you felt.
3. You recently travelled to Kerala. Write a diary entry detailing your journey, including how
you travelled, your itinerary, the places you visited, and your overall experience.
