Headline: Grade-9 studes learns more about volcanic explosion
Smokes emerged, lava flows, and amazement erupt from the faces of the Grade-9
students. For them, the experiment is not just for fun but it is also diving deeper to learn more
about the depths of the fiery world of volcanoes.
As everybody knows, volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust that allows lava, ash,
rocks and other materials to erupt onto the surface. Volcanoes form when magma, a thick
flowing substance, rises from deep within the Earth and reaches surface. Volcanoes can be
classified into three categories: Active, Dormant or Extinct.
Active volcanoes are volcanoes that had a recent eruption or are expected to erupt soon.
While dormant volcanoes are those who no longer erupt for 10,000 years but are expected to
erupt again. And extinct volcano are volcanoes that are unlikely to erupt again.
Volcanic eruptions can be explosive, sending materials high into the air, or calmer, with
gentle flows of material. The type of volcanoes can affect the type of eruption. For composite
volcanoes (also known as stratovolcanoes) these tall, and cone shaped volcanoes are often have
violent eruptions. On the other hand, shield volcanoes are low-lying volcanoes who erupt thin,
runny lava that spreads far from the vent. While cinder cone volcanoes shoot lave into thin air
like fountain.
According to Ma’am Niezel Mabelin, the science teacher, “This kind of activity is part of
the competency, for the students to witness how volcanoes erupt and to identify the students’
skills in performing the activity.”
With the use of baking soda, vinegar, food coloring and a bit of dishwashing soap, the
students are able to conduct the activity. While conducting the experiment the students are all
excited to witness what would be the outcome. The moment they tried the mixture excitement
and amazement are evident all over their faces, accompanied with their cheers and clap. Each
student shows enthusiasm as they are undergoing the said activity.
However, according to Mr. Barriga, a Grade 9 student, the outcome of their mixture are
not that explosive compared to the ones they have seen on social media. Yet, they can still
consider it successful as it was able to present them what happens how the materials build up the
pressure beneath the Earth’s crust before it explodes to the surface.
One group also stated that they conducted multiple experiments in order to attain the right
formula for an explosive eruption, however at their last experiment they suspect that they
commit a mistake that’s why they failed to achieve their goal.
When the baking soda is added to vinegar it will create a reaction producing a carbon
dioxide gas, because of its rapid production it creates bubble and pressure. And when it escapes
the vent of the volcano model it creates an eruption. Adding the dish soap, it traps the gas in the
bubble creating a foamy lava, while the food coloring enhances the visual effect making it look
like a molten lava. And with that it mimics the movement of a volcano when it is going to erupt
and if it erupt. The experiment showcases what happens inside the volcano for an eruption to
occur, with that it helps the students to understand the science buried in one of Earth’s
phenomena.
The experiment did not just teach them things about volcanic eruptions but it also teaches
them the essence of camaraderie. As said by Ms. Deannah Pantaleon, a Grade 9 student, “You
can feel the sense of teamwork, since we did not just conduct it once but we did it numerous of
time.”
“I find the part where our volcano is already erupting interesting, since it felt
accomplishing to see my team’s effort accumulate to the result. Though it was not as we
expected, we still had fun retrying and experimenting with different measurements and how each
reaction differentiated depending on the mixture,” she added.
These kinds of activities are somewhat essential to the students, because in this way,
learning can be fun and interesting, engaging to experimental activities sparks the curiosity of a
student, making them interested and making them understand the concept easily.
While others think that learning can be dull and boring, these Grade- 9 students shows
that there’s still fun in learning. And who knows, that by conducting such experimental
activities, another great scientist might be in the making.
