Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of
the following questions.
Vail Horton owns a multi-million dollar medical equipment company. Anthony Schwager creates
and markets dozens of popular products made from his bee farm’s honey. They are the disabled . These
are just two of the millions of people who refuse to let their disabilities stand in their way of success.
It’s estimated that around 650 million people worldwide have physical or mental disabilities,
including a significant portion of the workforce, and their numbers are increasing due to aging
populations. Despite challenges, many disabled individuals pursue their university degrees and special
training programs.
However, more needs to be done to welcome disabled people into the workforce. Technology is a
key help. So-called “adaptive technologies” make it possible for those with visual, hearing, and other
disabilities to handle a wide range of tasks. For instance, special software can print the contents of a
computer screen in Braille so a blind person can read it. Other types of software can read a screen aloud
or increase the size of text. There are also keyboards designed for use with just one hand. Disabled
workers welcome these advances as doors to a whole host of professions, from customer service jobs to
positions as computer engineers.
Office spaces are also being modified to make them more accessible. Usually, only minor changes
are needed, such as moving furniture, lowering desks, and installing a wheelchair ramp. In many
countries, the law mandates that employers make these changes if a disabled worker needs them. Firms
often worry the costs will be high, but that’s usually not the case. For instance, in the USA, the typical
employer spends $500 or less on adjustments.
Nevertheless, despite concerns, hiring individuals with disabilities is often a positive experience
for employers. Evidence debunks worries about productivity, as disabled workers show their loyalty,
strong work ethic, and low absenteeism rates.
Given the large number of disabled people worldwide, just having a mentally or physically
challenged person on staff can be a big advantage. They can help design, develop, and test products made
for disabled consumers. It’s a lucrative market, estimated to be worth some £80 billion per year in the
UK alone. Yet we still have a long way to go to educate employers and non-disabled employees about the
advantages of hiring and working with disabled people.

One option for school leavers is to pursue vocational education and training (VET) programs. VET
offers practical and skill-based training that prepares individuals for specific careers or industries. These
programs provide hands-on experience and often lead to recognized qualifications or certifications.
By choosing VET, school-leavers will have the opportunity to gain valuable skills and knowledge that
are directly applicable to the workforce. They can learn practical trades such as plumbing, carpentry, or
automotive mechanics, or specialize in areas like hospitality, healthcare, or information technology. VET
programs focus on building practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and industry-specific knowledge,
making graduates highly employable in their chosen fields.
Another advantage of VET programs is the flexibility they offer. Many VET courses are available at
different levels, from certificates to diplomas, allowing school-leavers to choose a program that suits their
interests and career goals. Furthermore, VET programs ams often incorporate work placements or
internships, providing students with real-world experience and networking opportunities within their
chosen industry.
Choosing VET as an option after finishing school can be a conducive pathway for those who prefer a
more hands-on and practical approach to learning. It offers a direct route to acquiring specific skills,
increasing employability, and opening doors to various career opportunities. Whether someone wants to
enter the workforce immediately or pursue further education in the future, VET can provide a solid
foundation for success.
