Reading Passage
Ellyanne Wanjiku Chlystun is a 14-year-old girl from Kenya who is famous for her work to save
the planet. She has met important people like King Charles and joined famous figures like Meji
Alabi and David Beckham in the fight against climate change.
When she was just four years old, Ellyanne was inspired by Wangari Maathai, a well-known
Kenyan tree planter and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Wangari planted millions of trees to show
how tree planting can help the environment and improve communities.
Wangari believed that women, especially in rural areas, could help the environment by planting
trees. She founded The Green Belt Movement in 1977, which planted about 45 million trees in
Kenya.
Ellyanne wanted to be like Wangari. She told her mother, Dorothy, about her dream.
However, her mother was worried because Wangari faced many dangers as an activist. She
encouraged Ellyanne to become a lawyer or doctor instead.
But Ellyanne didn’t give up. She started planting seeds and learned more about trees. With her
family's help, she created a group called Children With Nature in 2017 to promote
environmental awareness.
