THE ANNUNCIATION

The Angel Gabriel Appears to the Virgin

The Annunciation in Christianity is the announcement by angel Gabriel to the virgin

Mary that she would conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit and give birth to the
son of God, Jesus Christ.

The promise of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ to save the world was made by
God. Man’s sin had separated him from God. Man needed forgiveness of sins so that
the good relationship between him and God would be restored.

In the Old Testament, God sent the prophet Isaiah to announce the birth of Jesus.
Concerning the birth of Jesus Christ, he prophesied in Isaiah 7: 14 - 15 saying,
“Behold a young woman shall conceive and bear a son and shall call His name
Emmanuel. He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and
choose good.” Emmanuel means, “God is with us.” God is with us through Jesus
Christ to forgive us our sins.

In Isaiah 9:6, he further prophesied saying, “For to us, a child is born, to us, a son is
given and the government shall be upon His shoulders, and His name shall be called
wonderful, counselor, mighty God, everlasting father, prince of peace.”

In the New Testament, the announcement of the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ
was made by God through the angel Gabriel. The gospel of Luke (1:28-33) gave the
account of the annunciation. It recorded that angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town
in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of
the house of David, to announce the birth of Jesus Christ. The virgin’s name was
Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with
you.” When Mary saw the angel, she was afraid and the angel said to her, “Do not
be afraid Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive
in your womb and bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and
will be called the son of the Most-High and the Lord God will give him the throne
of his father David and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever and of his
kingdom there will be no end.”

Mary asked the angel to explain to her, how the pregnancy would come about
because she was a virgin at the time. And the angel told her that the Holy Spirit
would come upon her and that the power of God would overshadow her.

The prophesy came to pass when the virgin Mary became pregnant while she was
not yet married to Joseph whom she was engaged to. As soon as they were married
and she came to live with her husband, Joseph discovered that she had already
conceived and he was not happy about it. But in the night, angel Gabriel appeared
to Joseph in a dream, and told him that Mary was pregnant by the power of the Holy
Spirit.

This signifies that God knows the future, and he is able to accomplish anything He

plans to do.
It also means that God loved us so much and that was the reason why he promised
to give us a saviour.

THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST

MATTHEW’S ACCOUNT

According to the gospel of Matthew 1: 18-25, Mary was engaged to Joseph but
before they came together as husband and wife, she was found to be pregnant
through the Holy Spirit. Since Joseph and Mary were not yet married, he was not
happy. He thought that Mary had been unfaithful to him. But Joseph was a righteous
man, he did not want to expose her to public disgrace, so he decided to cancel the
engagement quietly.

When Joseph was planning this, an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him
not to do so because Mary’s pregnancy was by the Holy Spirit. The angel added that
Mary will give birth to a son and should be called Jesus because he will save his
people from their sins. Joseph obeyed the angel and took Mary home as his wife.
But he did not have sexual intercourse with her until she gave birth to a son. And he
gave him the name Jesus.

LUKE’S ACCOUNT

According to the account of Luke 2: 1-7, the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus
issued an order that there should be a census (a count of the population) in the whole
of the Roman Empire. This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was
governor of Syria. All the Jews in Palestine decided to go to their hometowns to be
counted. Joseph also left Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of
David, because he was of the house and lineage of David. He went there to register
with Mary who was engaged to him and was expecting a child.

While they were there, Mary’s time to give birth came and Joseph found a stable
where the animals were feeding in a manger. Mary gave birth to her child there in
the stable. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because
there was no place for them in the inn.

THE VISIT OF THE SHEPHERD LUKE 2:8-20

Shortly after the birth of Jesus, an angel appeared to some shepherds who were
taking care of their sheep in the field. The angel informed them that a saviour has
been born in Bethlehem in the city of David. And that the baby would be found
wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger.

After the angel had gone, the shepherds went to see the baby and told the parents
what the angel had told them and they left.

THE VISIT OF THE WISE MEN

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, during the reign of Herod the king, a
group of Magi or wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. They went to Herod
and asked him saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we
have seen his star in the East, and we have come to worship him.”

When Herod heard the news of the new king, he became troubled and all Jerusalem
with him. He called the chief priests and scribes to find out where the new king was
to be born. They told him that Christ was to be born in Bethlehem, in the land of
Judea according to the book of Micah.

Herod secretly asked the wise men the time the star appeared. And he said to them,
“Go and search diligently for the child and when you have found him, bring me
word, that I too may come and worship him.” The wise men left with the star leading
them to the place where the child was. When the star rested over the place where the
child was, the wise men greatly rejoiced. When they entered the stable, they saw
baby Jesus with Mary His mother and they fell down and worshipped Him. Then
they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
The wise men were told in a dream by an angel of God not to return to king Herod
because the king wanted to kill baby Jesus. They went back to their country through
another route.

When they departed, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream
instructing him to flee with the mother and child to Egypt because Herod the Great
was planning to kill the child. When Herod realized he had been deceived by the
wise men, he became angry and ordered that all male children in Bethlehem and in
that entire region who were two years old and below, according to the time he had
ascertained from the wise men should be killed.

When Herod died, Joseph returned back to Israel, but went to the region of Galilee
in a city called Nazareth. So that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled.
“He shall be called a Nazarene.”

WEEK TWO

PERIOD 1

THE PRESENTATION OF JESUS IN THE TEMPLE

BIBLE VERSE: Luke 2: 21-40

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should

be able to:

(1) narrate the prophesies of Simeon and Anna.

(2) state the significance of the presentation of Jesus in the temple.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures & videos.

CONTENT

Eight days after Jesus was born, he was circumcised and named Jesus according to
the instruction of angel Gabriel. Forty days after the birth of Jesus, his parents took
him to the temple in Jerusalem to be presented to the Lord.

According to the law of Moses, every first-born male child that opens the womb
shall be called Holy to the Lord. And the parents of the first male child should bring
the son to the temple in Jerusalem to be dedicated to God on the fortieth day. And
also, to offer a sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons in keeping
with what is said in the Law.

The presentation of Jesus coincided with the purification of Mary. A Jewish woman
who gave birth to a child was considered unclean, as a result of the flow of blood.
She remained unclean until the fortieth day when she performed the rites of
purification according to the Law of Moses in Leviticus 12: 2-12.

The presentation ceremony is today known as child/baby dedication and practice by

modern-day Christians. It is a beautiful moment during which parents present their
babies in thanksgiving before God in the church.
EVALUATION

1. How old was Jesus when he was circumcised?

2. What law made Jesus’ parents to present him in the temple?
3. How old was Jesus when he was dedicated?
4. Mention the items offered in the temple during the presentation.

ASSIGNMENT

Explain why Jesus was taken to the temple by his parents.

THE PROPHECY OF SIMEON LUKE 2:21-35

There was an old man who lived in Jerusalem named Simeon. The man was
righteous and devout. He was looking for the consolation of Israel, that is, the time
appointed by God to save His people. Simeon had been promised by the Holy Spirit
that he would not die until he had seen the saviour of the world with his own eyes.

When Jesus’ parents brought him to the temple for the presentation ceremony,
Simeon was moved by the Holy spirit to come to the temple at that particular time
also. He carried the baby Jesus into his arms and blessed God and said, “Lord now
let your servant go in peace, according to your word. For my eyes have seen your
salvation which you have prepared in the presence of all people, a light of revelation
to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel”.

The parents of Jesus were surprised at these things which were spoken of Him. And
Simeon also said concerning the baby Jesus and Mary, “This child is set for the fall
and rising of many in Israel; and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will
pierce through your own soul also) that the thoughts out of many hearts may be
revealed.”

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROPHECY OF SIMEON

The first part of Simeon’s prophecy refers to God’s plan of salvation for mankind
through Jesus Christ. God therefore fulfilled his plan of salvation through the birth
of Christ.

The second part of the Prophecy refers to the response of the Israelites to the
ministry of Jesus. Those who will accept him will be saved, and those who reject
him would not be saved.
The sword piercing through Mary’s heart may be reference to the anxious
moments that Mary would experience as Jesus carried out his ministry. Mary had
anxious moments during the arrest, trial, crucifixion and death of Jesus.

THE PROPHECY OF ANNA

Anna was a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. She was an
old woman of eighty-four years and a widow. she lost her husband seven years after
marriage. She spent all her time in the temple worshipping God with prayers and
fasting day and night. Anna was in the temple during the presentation of Jesus. She
gave thanks to God and spoke of Jesus to all who were looking for the redemption
of Jerusalem.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROPHECY OF ANNA

Anna’s prophecy concerns God’s work of salvation through Jesus. The Israelites
were expecting at that time that God would send down the saviour of the world.
Anna’s prophecy confirmed the fact that the time to save the world had come, with
the birth of Jesus.

WEEK THREE

PERIOD 1

THE BAPTISM OF JESUS

BIBLE VERSES: Mark 1:1-8, Luke 3:1-20

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should

be able to:

(1) define the term forerunner.

(2) explain the mission of John the Baptist.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures & videos.

JOHN THE FORERUNNER OF JESUS

A forerunner is somebody sent before or going before to announce or prepare the

way for another or for something to follow. The forerunner gives information about
the person coming and also lays the foundation for that person’s work.

God sent John the Baptist as the forerunner of Jesus to prepare the minds of the
people for the ministry of Jesus Christ.

John the Baptist was the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth and was preaching the
baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. He was crying in the wilderness
and telling the people to repent from their sins. Their sins had separated them from
God and John asked them to have a change of heart and repent so that God will
forgive them.

He wore a garment made of Carmel’s hair and a leather belt round his waist. His
food was locust and wild honey.

John told the people that everybody needs repentance. That the people should not
think that because they have Abraham as father, they don’t need repentance.

All the people who listened to John felt sorry for their sins. They confessed their sins
to John who then baptized them in River Jordan. They all asked what they should do
to lead repentant lives. John advised the ordinary people who were selfish to show
love and kindness to one another by sharing what they had with those who had none.

The tax collectors always cheated the people by collecting more than the required
tax. John advised them to stop the evil practice and collect the exact amount of tax.
He also advised the soldiers to be gentle in their dealings with the people. The people
asked John if he was the Christ and he told them he was not. But he said that He
who was coming after him was greater than he was, and that he was not good enough
to untie His sandals. He was only baptizing them with water but the Saviour would
baptize them with Holy Spirit and fire.

EVALUATION

1. Who is a forerunner?
2. What was the mission of John the Baptist?
3. What did John the Baptist tell the tax-collectors and the soldiers who asked him
what they should do?
4. Mention the names of the parents of John the Baptist.

THE BAPTISM OF JESUS CHRIST

BIBLE VERSES: Matthew 3:13-17, Mark1: 9-11, 21-22

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should

be able to:

(1) explain the meaning of baptism.

(2) narrate how Jesus was baptized by John.

(3) identity what happened during the baptism.

(4) state the significance of Jesus’ baptism.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures, videos & music.

JOHN THE BAPTIST BAPTIZED JESUS IN THE RIVER JORDAN

Baptism today is understood as a sacrament which washes away the original sins and
which marks the transition into a new kingdom ushered in by Jesus. It is a religious
rite which can be done by sprinkling of water on a person’s forehead or of immersing
them in water. Baptism is performed on young children and adults and it is a sign of
belonging to the new people of God.

The practice of baptism or ceremonial cleansing was part of the Jewish custom. This
was the baptism of John which Jesus had to partake as a means of identifying with
the people He had come to save.
Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in river Jordan and Jesus was about thirty
(30) years old when he was baptized.

When Jesus came from Galilee to river Jordan to be baptized by John the Baptist, he
was unwilling to baptize Him, for he said, “I need to be baptized by you and do you
come to me?”

John knew that Jesus was the son of God and He had no need to be forgiven of sins
because He was sinless.

Jesus encouraged John the Baptist to baptize Him by saying, “Let it be so now for
thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” So, John then baptized Him.

As Jesus was coming out of the water, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of
God descending like a dove upon him. At the same time a voice was heard from
heaven saying,” This is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased.”

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BAPTISM OF JESUS

1. The baptism presents Jesus as a law-abiding citizen.

2. It revealed the humility of Jesus because He allowed a lesser person to baptize
him.
3. The voice from heaven marked the first confirmation that Jesus is the son of God
and Messiah.
4. “To fulfill all righteousness” that was said by Jesus identified Him with the
custom and the people he had come to save.
5. The baptism was one of the preparations Jesus made for his public ministry.
6. The Holy Spirit that came upon Jesus after He was baptized, helped Him to fulfill
his earthly ministry.

THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS

BIBLE VERSES: Matthew 4:1-11, Mark1:12-13, Luke 4:1-13

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should

be able to:

(1) define temptation.

(2) narrate the story of the temptation of Jesus Christ.
(3) state the significance of the temptation of Jesus.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures, videos.

CONTENT
To tempt is to entice or persuade someone to do what he or she is not supposed to
do.

Temptation is a strong desire to do something, especially something negative or

unwise. For example, a student might be tempted to cheat during examination.
Temptation always comes from the devil. The devil always fills people’s mind with
evil thoughts and wrong ideas which results to wrong action. In the bible it indicates
trial that is, a situation that tests a person’s endurance when one is passing through
difficulties.

After Jesus had been baptized, He was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to
be tempted by the devil. Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights. After the fasting
Jesus became very hungry. Then, the devil appeared to Him and tempted Him three
times as follows:
TEMPTATION TO TURN STONE TO BREAD

First, the devil knew that Jesus was very hungry and said he to Him, “if you are the
son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” Jesus answered him,
“it is written, man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from
the mouth of God.”

TEMPTATION TO JUMP DOWN

Secondly, the devil took Jesus to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the
temple. Then he said to Jesus, “if you are the son of God, throw yourself down, for
it is written, “He will give his angels charge over you, and on their hands, they will
bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” Jesus replied, “You shall not
tempt the Lord your God.”

TEMPTATION TO WORSHIP SATAN

Thirdly, the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed Him all the
kingdoms of the world and their glory. Then, he said to Jesus, “All these will I give
to you if you fall down and worship me” Jesus replied, “Be gone, Satan! For it is
written, “you shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.”

After these, the devil left Him and the angel of God came and ministered to Him.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TEMPTATION

If Jesus had yielded to the first temptation, it would have presented Him as an
economic or material Messiah.

The second temptation would have reduced Jesus to the level of a magician and
wonder worker, if He had accepted to fall from the pinnacle of the temple.

If Jesus had succumbed to the request to bow down and worship Satan in order to
own the kingdoms of the world, He would have become a political messiah.

If Jesus was tempted by the devil, it means nobody is above temptation. We must
therefore try to overcome it.

SOME TEMPTATION IN NIGERIA TODAY

As children in Nigeria, we are tempted to:

➢ disobey or insult our parents, teachers, prefects, seniors and elders in the
society.
➢ be dishonest, selfish, wicked and cruel to those around us.
➢ tell lies or take things that do not belong to us.
➢ quarrel with our friends and fight one another.
➢ play truant or refuse to do our homework.
➢ cheat during continuous assessment or get involved in examination
malpractice.
➢ join bad company (Cult) and therefore behave like bad boys and girls by
smoking, drinking alcohol and taking dangerous drugs.
➢ engage in pre-marital sex.
➢ refuse to assist our parents at home or help contribute to the positive
development of our society.
WAYS OF OVERCOMING TEMPTATION

We can overcome temptation by;

❖ seeking the help of Jesus.

❖ studying and meditating on the word of God.
❖ avoiding bad friends.
❖ saying outright NO all the time to whatever is unholy.
❖ avoiding situations that will bring temptation.
❖ joining Christian youth association

PERIOD 1

THE CALL OF THE DISCIPLES

BIBLE VERSES: Matthew 4:18-22, Mark1:14-20, Luke5:1-11 & John 1:35-51

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should

be able to:

1. define a disciple.
2. narrate the call of the first four disciples.
3. list the names of the twelve disciples.
4. state the significance of the twelve disciples.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures & videos.

A disciple is a pupil, student or follower who receives instruction from his teacher.
After the period of instruction, the disciple goes to teach others what he /she had
learnt.

JESUS CALLS HIS FIRST FOUR DISCIPLES

The first four disciples of Jesus were Simon Peter and his brother Andrew, James
and John the sons of Zebedee.

According to Matthew and Mark’s accounts, Jesus was walking along the sea of
Galilee when He saw Peter and Andrew his brother casting their nets into the sea
for, they were fishermen. Jesus called them to be his disciples saying, “follow me,
and I will make you fishers of men”. Immediately, they obeyed Jesus and left their
nets and followed Him.
As Jesus moved a little further, he met another two brothers, James and John the
sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee mending their broken
nets. Jesus called them and immediately they left their father and followed him.

LUKE’S ACCOUNT

One day, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding
around him and listening to the word of God. He saw two boats left there by the
fishermen who were washing their nets. He entered one of the boats belonging to
Simon Peter and pushed down a little from the shore where the audience stood facing
him. He sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished
speaking, he said to Peter, “put out into the deep and let down your net for a catch.”
But Peter replied that they had worked hard all night and didn’t catch any fish, but
they would try again because he had said so.

When they tried again, they had a great catch of fish and their nets began to tear.
They signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them and they came
and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Peter saw this, he fell at
Jesus knees and said,

“Depart from me, O Lord, for I am a sinful man”

Jesus then said to Simon Peter:

“Do not be afraid, henceforth you will be catching men”

When Peter, Andrew, James and John had pulled their boats on shore, they left
everything and followed Jesus.

JESUS CALLS THE TWELVE DISCIPLES (MK 3:13-19)

Apart from the first four disciples, Jesus called Matthew or Levi, a tax collector to
be his disciple and he did. The gospel of John also tells us of the call of Phillip. Many
other people followed Jesus even though he did not call them. They realized that
Jesus was the greatest teacher and so they decided to follow Him so that they might
learn from Him.

When Jesus realized that many people were following Him, He decided to select
twelve of them to be his disciples. The reasons were because, He was alone and the
disciples would provide Him company and companionship. He would concentrate
on them and teach them all about his ministry. Also, He wanted them to carry on
with His work or ministry.

A day before Jesus chose His disciples, He went to a mountain to pray. He prayed
for God to help Him through the Holy Spirit to select the right men. Jesus wanted
faithful, loyal and honest men who would devote their time and lives to the service
of God. The next day Jesus selected twelve men from among the people that
followed him to be his disciples.

The names of the twelve disciples are as follows:

1. Simon Peter.
2. Andrew.
3. James.
4. John.
5. Phillip.
6. Bartholomew.
7. Matthew.
8. Thomas.
9. James (the son of Alphaeus)
10.Simon the Zealot.
11.Thaddeus.
12.Judas Iscariot.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SELECTION OF THE TWELVE

DISCIPLES

The selection of twelve represents the twelve tribes of Israel which were the old
covenant people of God. Therefore, the disciples selected by Jesus were to form the
foundation members of the new covenant people of God (believers) which Jesus
came to establish. This New Community is the Church of Christ.

THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP

BIBLE VERSES: Matthew 8:18-27, Luke 9:57-63, 14:25-33

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should

be able to:

(1) define ‘demands of discipleship’.

(2) list and explain the demands of discipleship.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures & videos.

CONTENT

The demands of discipleship are the requirements, cost and sacrifices of following
Jesus as a true disciple. To be a disciple of Jesus has its demands and obligations.

Discipleship is about two things. The first one is to be a true believer in Christ and
secondly, it is about being a devoted follower of Jesus. When Jesus taught the
disciples about the demands of discipleship he said, to be a true believer and a
devoted follower, one has to face insecurity, put God first in everything, be totally
committed, sacrifice the interest of the family and self, practice self-denial and count
the cost involved in discipleship.

INSECURITY IN DISCIPLESHIP (Matthew 8:19-20, Luke 9:57-58)

There is no security, personal gain or comfort attached to discipleship. It is full of

dangers, uncertainties and personal risks. A certain scribe became interested in
following Jesus and he met Jesus and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you
go.” Jesus replied him saying, foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests but
the son of man has nowhere to lay His head.” This means that discipleship involves
going from place to place to preach the gospel.

PUTTING GOD FIRST IN DISCIPLESHIP (Luke 9:57-60)

A true disciple must give the first place to God. He must prefer or love Jesus more
than anybody and choose to serve Him at all times. This is seen in the reply Jesus
gave to the man who asked Him for permission to go and bury his father and then
come back to follow Him. Jesus told the man to leave the dead to bury their own
dead.

TOTAL COMMITMENT IN DISCIPLESHIP (Luke 9:61-62)

Jesus further taught that one of the demands of discipleship is total commitment.
Discipleship is a serious undertaking that requires being focus and avoiding any form
of distraction. This teaching was pointed out in Jesus’ encounter with someone who
said to Him, “I will follow you Lord, but let me go back and say farewell to those at
my home.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plough and look back is
fit for the kingdom of God.” This means that going home is a distraction as one
might be discouraged by friends or family members.

SACRIFICING THE INTEREST OF FAMILY AND SELF IN

DISCIPLESHIP (Luke14:26)

Jesus taught that one of the conditions of discipleship is that one must be ready to
sacrifice the interest of his family and self for God. Jesus made this clear when he
said, “If any one comes after me and does not hate his own father or mother and
children and brothers and sisters and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple”

This means that the disciple must put God’s interest first before family and self.

SELF–DENIAL IN DISCIPLESHIP

“If any man comes after me let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and
follow me. Self-denial means “self-sacrificing” and “self-forgetting”. The cross was
the means by which people were put to death during the time of Jesus. The person
was left on the cross until he died. It is a means of punishing people and disgracing
them. The person to be persecuted suffers as he carries the cross to the place of
execution. This means that the disciple must be willing to endure suffering,
humiliation, and disgrace.

Jesus is teaching here that discipleship is a difficult task. Therefore, the disciple must
be willing to endure pain or even lose his life for Christ’s sake.
COUNTING THE COST IN DISCIPLESHIP (Luke: 14:28 -32)

Jesus taught that since discipleship is a difficult and dangerous task one should not
rush into it. He said anyone who does not count the cost would be like a builder who
did not count his cost before building.

One should sit down and carefully ask if he is ready to endure pain, disgrace,
humiliation etc. This was why Jesus said before one builds a house, he or she must
have enough money to finish it. Also, before a king goes to war, he must have enough
weapons and good soldier for the battle. if not, he should go and make peace before
he loses the battle.

In discipleship, one should sit down and count the cost of becoming a disciple.

2. List and explain two demands of discipleship.

JESUS MEET SINNERS

BIBLE VERSES: John 3:1-17, Luke19:1-9

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should

be able to:

(1) identify Jesus as a merciful Lord to sinners.

(2) narrate the story of Zacchaeus.
(3) state the moral lessons from Zacchaeus’ encounter with Jesus.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures & videos.

ZACCHAEUS MEETS JESUS

A sinner is a person that breaks or violates the commandments of God. Jesus is

merciful to the worst offenders, sinners and law breakers. He forgives them and
preaches the word to them so that they can change for the better.

As Jesus was passing through Jericho, a man was there named Zacchaeus. He was a
chief tax collector and rich. He wanted to see who Jesus was but being a short man,
he could not because of the crowd. So, he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree
to see him since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus got to the tree he looked
up and said, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for I must stay at your house
today”. He quickly came down and welcomed Jesus into his house.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”
Zacchaeus was overwhelmed that Jesus came to his house. He then promised to take
drastic measures to right the wrongs he had done and to live his life in a better and
more righteous way. So, he said to Jesus, “Look, Lord! Here and now, I give half of
my possession to the poor and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay
back four times the amount.”

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is
a son of Abraham, for the son of man came to seek and save the lost.”
MORAL LESSONS

1. Our focus should be on God and not to be discouraged by what people say or
think about us.
2. We should desire to have an encounter with God more than anything.
3. Restitution is necessary in our faith.
4. Do whatever it takes to change your life for the better.
5. Riches cannot give you peace of mind / salvation.
6. Our faith is real if it is followed up with actions.
7. We must repent of our sins and welcome Jesus into our hearts.
8. We should learn to give to the poor.
9. We should not discriminate because no one is beyond saving.
10.Remember Jesus came for the lost souls.

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT (Matthew 5:1-12)

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should

be able to:

1. define beatitudes.

2. list the beatitudes and their reward.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures & videos.

THE BEATITUDES

The word beatitude means different things. It means blessedness, happiness, success,
fortunate and prosperity. The beatitudes present a new set of ideas that focus on the
humble state of humans and the righteousness of God. The beatitudes seem to offer
various consolation to the downtrodden. Jesus names a group of people thought to
be unfortunate and pronounces them blessed.

The phrase “blessed are” in each beatitude implies a current state of happiness or
well-being.

The beatitudes are divided into two sections: the first section contains the quality a
Christian should possess. While the second section contains the reward for
possessing each of the attitude mentioned.

As Jesus was preaching the word of God, he saw the crowd and went up on a
mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him and he began to teach them.
THE BEATITUDES READS

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peace makers, for they shall be called the sons of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil
against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in
heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The lessons learnt from the beatitudes as present-day Christians are that people are
blessed even in hard times. And there is always a reason to be thankful to God no
matter the situation we find ourselves.

We are also blessed for having honourable qualities such as being meek, righteous,
merciful, pure, and peacemakers.

EVALUATION

1. Explain the meaning of beatitude.

2. Complete the following statements:

a) “Blessed are the pure in heart……………….……”

b) “The meek are those who will …………….……”
c) “Blessed are the merciful for they shall ……………..………”
d) Blessed are those who mourn ………………….”
e) Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for ……..….”

CHRISTIANS AS SALT AND LIGHT OF THE WORLD

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should

be able to:

1. explain how Christians are salt of the earth.

2. discuss Christians as light of the world.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures & videos.

CHRISTIANS AS SALT OF THE EARTH

Jesus, during His Memorable Sermon on the mount taught the disciples of their
responsibilities in the society and the world.

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it
be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and
trampled by men.’’

Salt is a precious commodity that is used as preservatives to save meat and food from
spoiling as Jesus saves our soul from damnation and separation from God for
sinning. Salt also gives taste flavor to food.

The Christian’s task is to be the salt of the world, preserving, adding taste and giving
meaning where there is no meaning. It is about the quality of life we live here on
earth as Christians. The followers of Christ stand out as those who enhance the flavor
of life in this world. Christians living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and in
obedience of Christ influence the world for good as salt add flavor to food.
Christians are to show love, exemplify the love of God in Christ, return good for
evil, be good, honest and peacemakers.

God put Christians on the earth to make the world a better place for everyone. So,
we are called to take our place and make the earth better.

They should encourage godly conduct or right living in the society by influencing
the society with their godly lives and showing good examples.

But when Christians conduct themselves badly in the society and deviate from living
Christ like life and engages in sin, they lose their value and become worthless and
useless like tasteless salt.

CHRISTIANS AS LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Jesus also said, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden,
nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket. But on the lamp stand and it
gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way
that they will see your good work and glorify your father who is in heaven.”

The presence of Christians in the world must be like a light in darkness in the sense
that our good deeds must be evident for all to see. Christians will not only stand out
for their own sake but that those who look on might glorify their father who is in
heaven.

Followers of Christ give light to those around them by doing and saying what Jesus
did. By growing in relationship with him every day and spreading the truth.

To be a light is to have good character at home, school or the community where we

live. So, through that many will come and see the light in Jesus Christ.
EVALUATION

2. Explain the context “Christians as light of the world.”

of the world.

WORLDLY POSSESSION (Matthew16:26, Luke 16:11)

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the student should

be able to:

1. explain the meaning of worldly possession.

2. state the right attitudes of Christians towards earthly possession.

3. list some worldly possession.

4. state Jesus’ attitude towards worldly possession.

TEACHING AIDS: Pictures & videos.

Worldly possession also known as worldly belonging is all the property that
someone possess. They are material wealth on earth such as buildings, cars, money,
laptop etc.

Most rich people have the wrong attitude towards earthly possession. They think the
true value of live is the amount of property they have. They also think that their
wealth is for them alone.

It is so unfortunate today that many children of God have fallen to the grip of worldly
possession. They allow themselves to be controlled by wealth instead of serving God
with it. Jesus condemned these negative attitudes towards wealth. He said when
people pay much attention to material wealth; it affects their spiritual and moral
growth. He emphasized that people should pay attention to the things of heaven by
seeking God first in all things.
JESUS’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS WORLDLY POSSESSION

Jesus showed Christians an example in his third temptation in the wilderness. Jesus
did not yield to the temptation of gaining the whole world if he bowed to Satan.
Also, during his ministry on earth, He taught Christians that wealth should be looked
at as a secondary thing and not as the most important thing in life.

God is the most important being in life. We should put our trust and confidence in
Him and not in wealth. Earthly possessions cannot save us, only God through Jesus
Christ.

God is the owner and giver of wealth. Therefore, rich people are caretakers of God’s
property. He wants us to use his property for the benefit of the poor and the needy,
support the work of the church, donate to the community and do other good work so
that He will bless us.

EVALUATION

(1) Explain the meaning of earthly possession.

(2) What did Jesus teach about earthly possession?
