MACHINE TOOLS – RAJKOT

(MODEL – AGH – 267 / 304)

All The Oil Means Should Be Filled Or Inspected At Least Once A

Day. More Often When The Lathe
Operates Day And Night Or When Top Speeds Feeds Are Employed.
Dirt And Chips Should Be Brushed Away Before Oiling To Prevent
Them From Working Into The Oil Holes. The Best Practice Is To Fill
Each Oil Hole in A Regular Sequence So That Oiling Will Become A
Habit And No Oil Holes Will Be Overlooked.

LEVELING:
The Lathe Can Give Satisfactory Performance Only If It Is Placed on a Well-Laid Foundation
Made According To The Foundation Drawing And Accurate Leveling. The Machine Must Be
Leveled Accurately. Use Precision Level Graduated To 0.02/0.05 MM/Meter Of Level Bottle.
Follow The Procedure Given For Accurate Leveling.

(Ref. In Bellow Figure)

A. TRANSVERSE LEVEL:
(a) Keep The Precision Level On Cross-Slide Top At Center In Transverse Position.
(b) Take Carriage To Head-Stock End; Adjust The Bubble In Precision Level At Center By
Adjusting Leveling Bolts.
(c) Move The Carriage To Tailstock End And Adjust The Bubble To The Same Reading As
Thae Of Head Stock End.
(d) Make Both The Readings Identical.
(e) Move The Carriage To The Center Of Bed.
(f) Note The Change In Reading.

B. LONGITUDINAL LEVEL:
(a) Do Not Adjust The Leveling Bolts.
(b) Move The Carriage To The Center Of Bed.
(c) Keep The Precision Level On Cross Slide Top Near Front V Of Bed In Longitudinal
Position.
(d) Ensure The Bubble Position At The Center Of The Level Markings.
(e) Recheck The Transverse Level.
(f) Move the Carriage to Head Stock End and Then to Tail Stock End.
(g) Note The Readings.

After Properly Leveling The Machine, Run The Machine For About 2 Hours At Various
Speeds And Check Levels Reset If Required.
Then Foundation Bolts Are Grouted In The Large Holes Kept By a 1:3 Cement Mixture.
Sufficient Time Should Be Allowed For The Cement To Cure (3-4 Days). The Foundation
Bolts Are Then Tightened Without Undue Force. Periodically Check-Up Bed Level to Ensure
Continued Lathe Accuracy.

❖ OPERATION:

DRIVE ARRANGEMENT:
These Lathes Have An Independent Motor Drive. The Direction of
Rotation of the Main Spindle Should Be In Anticlockwise When
Viewed From The Tailstock End.

STARTING:
Before Starting, the Machine Must Be Cleaned Thoroughly And Then
Lubricated According To The Instruction Mentioned Under Heading
Lubrication. The Operator Should Get Acquainted With All the
Operation Controls Before Starting The Lathe To See That The
Machine Runs Easily In Every Position. For The First Time the
Machine Should Be Run At The Lowest Speed To See The Condition
Of The Bearings. Full Loading on the First Run Should Be Avoided.

CHANGING THE SPINDLE SPEEDS:

The Spindle Speeds Are Changed By Shifting The Lever A B C D And
E F Position Stop The Machine Before Changing Speeds. Following
Figure Shows Spindle Speeds Which Can Be Obtained by Using the
Various Lever Positions Provided Electric Motor With 1440 RPM.

LUBRICATION CHECKS:

Oil From Head Stock, Feed Box And Apron Is Drained Out Before Shipment. Fill
Up Suitable Oil in Head Stock and Feed Box and Apron to the Level Indicated By
Oil Sight Glass before Operating the Machine. Oil Nipples on Tailstock, End
Bearing Bracket, Compound Slides, Cross Slide Etc Should Be Charged With
Suitable Oil by Means Of An Oil Gun. Bed Guide-Ways, Lead Screw, Rack, Feed
Rod And Control Shaft Should Be Smeared With Same Oil. Refer Lubrication
Details For Appropriate Grades Of Oils To Be Used.

POSSIBLE OPERATIONAL DIFFICULTIES AND REMEDIES:

I. CAUSES OF INACCURATE TURNING:

The Cause Of Inaccurate Turning May Be Due To Faulty Erection Of The Lathe.
Hence the Importance of Accurate Erection And Proper Grouting Of The Machine
Can Not Therefore Be Overlooked. In Spite Of This Inaccurate Turning Occurs After
Some Use It Is Possible That the Gibs (Wedges) Of the Slides Requires Adjustment,
Provided the Cutting Tool Is Properly Clamped And Does Not Vibrate. Chattering On
Lathe, Especially When Turning Overhang Can Be Avoided By Changing The Feed
And Speed. If The Change In Speed And Feed Does Not Stop The Chattering. It May
Be Due To Any of the Following Reasons:

1. Improper Leveling Of the Lathe Machine.

2. The Legs Are Not Properly Grouted.
3. The Work Piece Is Overhanging Too Far a Steady Rest Should Be Used.
4. Long Components Being Machined Without Proper Supports by Steady Rest.
5. Back Plate Of Chuck Not Fitted Properly.
6. The Gibs (Wedges) Of the Slides Needs Adjustment.
7. Dirt between Spindle Nose Taper and Centre-Holder.
8. The Overhang Of The Cutting Tool Is More.
9. The Cutting Tool Is Note Clamped Firmly.
10. Unbalanced Fixture Of Work-Piece Which Causes Vibration Especially At
High Speeds.

II. SPINDLE RUNS TOO TIGHTLY AND BEARINGS BECOME TOO HOT IN THE HEAD
STOCK:
(a) Check the Bearing Lubrication Portion and See Whether It Needs
Lubrication. Use Good Quality Of Oil.
(b) Loosen the Check Nuts Provided At Rear End of Spindle and Adjust The
Thrust Bearing Play For Smooth Rotation.

III. GEAR TRAIN IN END FEED MECHANISM MAKES SOUND WHEN RUNNING:
(a) Check Whether The Gears Are Meshing Properly With Correct Clearance.
(b) Check Whether The Fixing Nut And Bolts Are Well Tightened.
(c) Check Whether Any Damage Marks On Gear Teeth. If So, Remove The Same.
(d) Lubricate The Gear Train At All Points Thoroughly.

IV. THE DEPTH OF CUT CHANGESATTHE TIME OF LONGITUDINAL FEED:

(a) Check Whether The Depth Of Cut Is More.
(b) Adjust The Wedge Of Cross Slide And Compound Slide.
(c) Check The Rigidity (Clamping) Of The Tool.
(d) Check The Cutting Edge Sharpness Of The Tool.

V. APRON AND CARRIAGE ASSEMBLY SLIDES TIGHTLY ON THE BED WAYS:

(a) Clean The Sliding Surface And Lubricate It Thoroughly.
(b) Loose the Carriage Clamping Screws If Is Tight and Adjust It Properly. The
Carriage Clamp Can Be Seen From Right Side Of The Apron And Below The
Carriage.
(c) Check The Whole Length Of Leading Screw And Feed Shaft Whether It Is Bend
During Transportation.

VI. THREADING OVERLAPS:

(a) Check The Play Between Lead Screw And Half Nut If The Play Is More Adjust
The Same.
(b) Check The Change Gear Train (Numbers Of Gear Teeth) Whether The Same Is
As Per The Thread Chart Or Not.
(c) Half Nuts Should Be Engaged As Per The Instructions Given Under The Heading
'THREAD DIAL INDICATOR".

VII. THE TAPER TURNING OPERATION THROUGH TAPER TURNING ATTACHMENT.
