Recall
The logical arrangement of ideas is known as the pattern of development. The pattern
helps you follow ideas easily and understand a text better.
Patterns of Development
1. Narration involves telling a story or recounting events in a chronological order.
2. Description focuses on providing detailed information about a person, place,
object, or event.
3. Definition writing explains a term or concept in detail, often by providing its
characteristics, examples, and distinctions from other similar terms.
4. Exemplification provides specific examples to clarify a general idea, while
classification involves grouping things based on shared characteristics.
5. Comparison and contrast highlight the similarities and differences between two or
more subjects.
6. Cause and effect writing explain the reasons behind an event or phenomenon and
its subsequent results.
7. Problem-solution writing presents an issue and proposes one or more solutions.
8. Persuasion aims to convince the reader to adopt a particular viewpoint or take
action.

Learning Objective:
At the end of this activity, you will be able to use different writing patterns to write your own essays
or texts, clearly organizing and expressing your ideas.

Directions: In this activity, you will develop your ability to analyze social issues, propose
solutions, and effectively argue for your beliefs. In each activity, you will practice organizing your
thoughts, presenting well-reasoned arguments, and using evidence to support your views.

Part 1: Problem-Solution Writing

Identify a significant problem in your community or society, explain why it is an issue, and propose
realistic solutions.
1. Choose a Problem: Identify a pressing problem that impacts your community or society. It
could be something local, such as pollution, lack of education, or homelessness, or a broader
issue like climate change, poverty, or inequality.
2. Introduction: Start with a brief introduction that introduces the problem. Explain why this
problem is important and its impact on the community or society. Make sure to engage the
reader and provide a reason why they should care about the issue.
3. Describe the Problem: In the body of your essay, provide a detailed explanation of the
problem. Use specific examples or data to show how the problem manifests and who or what
it affects. Discuss the seriousness of the issue, outlining why it needs to be addressed.
4. Propose Solutions: Next, propose realistic and actionable solutions to the problem. Describe
how these solutions can alleviate or solve the issue. Provide clear steps that can be taken,
whether by individuals, organizations, or the government. Make sure the solutions are
practical and feasible.
5. Conclusion: End your essay by summarizing the problem and the proposed solutions. You may
also briefly discuss the potential impact of solving the problem, reinforcing why it is important
to take action.
6. Compose your essay with a minimum of 3 sentences to a maximum of 5 sentences for the
introduction, body and conclusion.

Part 2: Persuasive Writing
You will choose a topic you feel strongly about and argue for your position. The goal is to persuade
your reader to adopt your point of view through logical reasoning, emotional appeals, and credible
evidence.
1. Choose Your Topic: Select a topic that you feel passionate about and have strong opinions on.
It could be something like the importance of voting, the need for renewable energy, or the
benefits of exercise. Make sure it is something that has clear arguments for and against, so you
can persuade others to agree with your stance.
2. Introduction: Begin with an engaging introduction that presents your topic and clearly states
your position. Make sure to capture the reader’s attention and set up the importance of the
issue.
3. Present Your Arguments: In the body of your essay, present the reasons why you believe your
position is correct. Use logical reasoning, facts, statistics, and examples to support each point.
Each paragraph should cover one main reason or argument that supports your position.
4. Address Counterarguments: A strong persuasive essay acknowledges and refutes opposing
viewpoints. Briefly discuss the other side of the argument, but explain why your position is
stronger or more valid. This demonstrates critical thinking and helps strengthen your
argument.

5. Emotional Appeal: Appeal to the emotions of your reader. Use compelling language to evoke a
sense of urgency, empathy, or concern. Emotional appeals should complement logical
reasoning and make your argument more persuasive.
6. Conclusion: End your essay with a strong conclusion that restates your position and
summarizes your key arguments. Finish with a call to action or a thought-provoking statement
that leaves a lasting impact on the reader.
7. Compose your essay with a minimum of 3 sentences to a maximum of 5 sentences for the
introduction, body and conclusion.
