INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP AND INDUSTRY

PROFILE

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO INTERNSHIP

Organization study is a essential part of the academic curriculum of VTU MBA. I was
permitted by the “INCAP Pvt Ltd . PANDITHANAHALLI,TUMKUR to carry out the
internship During the internship study, I came to know that the company is involved in
providing electronics manufacturing services mainly to the companies operating in the power
electronics segment. My project was related to study of organization. During my internship I
could understand the systematic way followed by the company and how they make the
employees to feel the sense of belongingness the company has around employees 500, working
in all

The department of the company. I had to visit the company once a week. My external guide
. Mrs. Pallavi He also provided me the information regarding history and how the company in
PANDITHANAHALLI,TUMKUR as started. He gave me the information regarding the
products produced. SWOT analysis, application of Porters Five force model and Mckensy’s 7S
model he introduced me the various department of the company and explained about their work
processes to me which facilitated and support my entire project work.

Organization study involves careful study about how people inside the organization interact
with one another and how they can be made better to communicate their concern. This study
process helps the management students to have a practical knowledge of how an organization
executes its various functions to achieve its objectives. it helps in giving a clear picture of
various department along with their functions, goals, No department can function properly
without cooperation of other. The success of every organization depends on the extent of
cooperativeness and understanding the various functional department of the organization has,

8
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

Further, the organization study helped me in understanding the efficiency of organization and
theoretical knowledge into practice.

Organization report helps the management students in understanding the efficiency. Relevance
and the importance of each department. It helps to achieve the overall goal of the company.
The SWOT analysis helps the company to understates strength and weakness, opportunities
sand threats from internal and external environment. The problem identification makes the
company to know the problem in specific field and helps in taking the corrective action for
improvement in operations. As a student, it helps to understand the functioning of department
and the organizations as whole.

electronic device manufacturers,

15
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

WORKFLOW MODEL

A shop floor is the area of the factory, machine shop, etc. where people work on machines, or
the space in the factory where goods are produced and sold to consumers. The term shop floor
is in contract to office, which is a space that provides accommodation to the business’s
management

The INCAP manufactures the PCB (Printed circuit board) on the contract basis and distribute
to the buyers whole of India. The INCAP produces all types of PCB’S following are the steps
involved in production of printed circuit board.

16
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

IQC (internal quality control)

The quality of printed circuit boards and components are the major determinants in the
process yield of PCB assemblies. The soon defects are identified the less costly the remedial
activities. Therefore, it is critical that PCB quality is verified before the assembly process.

One of the most common quality control measures is to perform a visual inspection. This might
be an acceptable approach on single layer PCBs, but it not accurate or definitive.

Electrical testing is the reliable method used to verify the quality of all types of PCBs.

There are two types of electrical tests that which are usually performed on bare printed circuit
board

 Flying probe test

 Universal grid test

17
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

AXIAL INSERTION

This is the process by which leaded through hole components (mainly resistors, diodes and
inductors) are automatically inserted into the holes of printed circuit boards. and mechanically
fixed in place by the under-board clinching of each components.

18
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

SMT (Surface-mount technology)

Surface-mount technology (SMT), originally called planar mounting, is a method in which the
electrical components are mounded directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board. An
electrical component mounted in this manner is referred to as surface-mount device. In industry
this approach has largely replaced the through-hole technology constructions method of fitting
components. In large part because SMT allows for increased manufacturing automation which
reduces cost and improve the quality. It also allows for more components to fit on a given area
of substrate. Both technologies can be used on the same board.

An SMT component is usually smaller than its through-hole counterpart because it has either
smaller leads or no leads at all. It may have short pins or leads or no leads of various styles.
Flat contacts, a matrix of solder ball or terminations on the body of the component.

19
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

PREPARATIOIN

PCB preparation is the process of transcribing a circuit board design onto the physical structure
of the board. By contrast, PCB preparation is the process of actually placing components onto
the board to make it functional.

20
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

STUFFING

Printed circuit board assembly is also known as stuffing or populating the bare printed circuit
board is quite an intricate process involving many different phases.

There are 3 main phases in creating PCB

PCB development can be defined as the process of taking a circuit board design from the design
to the production. This typically includes three stages Design, manufacturing, testing.

21
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

WAVE SOLDERING

Wave soldering is a bulk soldering process used for the manufacturing of PCB. the circuit
boards, is passed over a pan of molten solder in which a pump produces an upwelling of solder
that looks like a standing wave. As the circuit board makes contact with the wave, the
components become soldered with the components used for both through-hole oriented circuit
assemblies, and surface mount. In the latter case, the component are glued onto the surface of
a PCB by placement equipment, before being run through the molten solder wave. Wave
soldering is mainly used in soldering of through hole components.

As through-hole components have been largely replaced by surface mount components, wave
soldering has been supplanted by reflow soldering methods in many large scale electronics
applications.

22
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

COATING

It is the most common choice for PCBs that need to be coated completely and is often chosen
for applications with low mechanical stress Silicon resin coating provide excellent thermal
chemical, moisture and corrosion resistance while maintain flexibility

23
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

COATING INSPECTI0N

Coating inspection are applied to assembly PCB to protect both the board and its components
against environment factors, such as moisture or dryness temperature, chemical, or dust.

The aim of the external inspection of coated PCB is to determine if all the surface and devices
are adequately covered. In order to make easy such as inspection,

PCBA INSPECTION

In order to make sure that PCBs are performing as intended, manufactures must verify all
components are assembled correctly. This is done with a range of techniques including simple
manual inspections to automated tests that use advanced PCB inspection equipment.

24
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

ICT (In-circuit Test)

ICT is a standard test method to check the PCBA manufacturing defect and poor components
by testing the electrical performance and connections of circuit components.

It mainly checks the in circuit individual components and the open and short circuit conditions
of each circuit network. It has the characteristics of simple operations, fast and rapid, and
accurate fault location. A good electronic engineer will pre-consider test point when designing
PCB.

FCT TEST

FCT TEST or functional circuit test, is a type of testing performed on PCBs during the
manufacturing process. And this test checks for shorts and open circuits in the PCB and verifies
that the board is functioning correctly. In addition, FCT is an important step in quality control
for PCBs, and it typically gets performed after the soldering process.

25
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

FCT is important because it helps ensure that PCBs function correctly and there are no
manufacturing defects. Beside this test can identify problem with the PCB before shipping to
the customers, which can save money.

POTTING

PCB POTTING is a method used to protect circuit boards (referred to in these contexts as the
substrate) By filling a PCB enclosure with a liquid material called a potting compound or
encapsulation resin.

BOX BUILD

“Box build”, also known as systems integration, is the complete assembly of a customers finish
product. The process goes beyond the production of printed circuit board extending to
electromechanical assembly that includes enclosure fabrication, installation of sub-assemblies
and components. The box can be referred as PCB assembly.

CHAPTER 3
MC- KENSYS 7S Framework

The mc Kinsey 7S framework is a management model developed by well-known business

consultants Robert H. waterman, Jr. and Tom peters (who also developed the MBWA
(Management by Walking Around) motif, and authored in search of excellence) in the 1980s.
This was a strategic vision for groups, to include businesses, business units, and teams. The 7s
are structure, strategy, systems, style, staff and shared values. The model is most often used as
an organizational analysis tool to assess and monitor changes in the internal situation of an
organization.

The Mc Kinsey model describes how to organize the organization in a holistic and effective
way. The 7s are structure, strategy, skill, staff, style, system and shared value. Collectively all
these factors determine the way how organization operates to achieve its goals.

The Seven Elements

The Mc Kinsey 7s model involves seven interdependent factors which are categorized as either
“Hard” or “Soft” elements:

“Hard” Elements are easier to define or identify and management can directly influence them,
they are Strategy statements, organization charts and reporting lines, and formal processes and
31
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

IT systems.

“Soft” elements on the other hand, can be more difficult to describe, and are less tangible and
more influenced by culture. However, these soft elements are as important as the hard elements
if the organization is going to be success.

7s are categorized into Hard and Soft skills

Hard components: strategy. Structure. System.

Soft components: skill. Staff style &shared values

How to use the model

PORTERS 5 FORCE MODEL

Five force model of Michael porter is a very elaborate concept for evaluating company’s
competitive position. Michael porter provided a framework that models an industry and
therefore implicitly also businesses as being influenced by five forces. Michael porter’s Five
Force models is often used in strategic planning, porter’s competitive five force model is
probably one of the most commonly used business strategy tools and has proven its usefulness
in numerous situations when exploring strategic management models.

PORTER’S FIVE FORCES INLUDE:

Three forces from “Horizontal competition”
 Threat from new entrants
 Threat from substitute product
 Threat of established rivals or competitive rivalry

The forces from” vertical competition”

 The bargaining power of buyers

 The bargaining power pf suppliers

43
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

1. Threat of New Entry

This force analyses the ability to enter a market by new entrants. They will add new capacity
to market and therefore drive down prices. If its easy to enter a new market will depend on the
market barriers, for example the need of “economic of scale” brand loyalty by customers, or
extensive knowledge on a product or service, but also capital requirement or government
policies.
 Low barriers in the domestic market.
 Economic scale are high.
 Brand identify of a company in this industry is high.
 Capital requirement to establish a regional or a national operation are high.
 The companies operating at the national level do manage to make economic profit but
entry barriers at this are very high.
 Thus, the threats of the entrants are moderate

2. Buyer power

This force analyses the power buyers have over suppliers and therefore the company to
influence the market prices. When there are a limited number of buyers and many suppliers in
the market, they will have more buying power. It means that the buyers can easily switch to an
alternative.

 Product differences and brand identity are quite high.

 Buyer information is high.
 Buyer concentration is very low.
 Thus, the bargaining power of buyers are low.

44
AN ORGANIZATION STUDY AT INCAP INDUSTRIES PANDITHANAHALLI,

3. Threat of substitution
This force analyses the possibility of the replacement of a product or service in the market by
an alternative that isn’t equal by fulfils the same functions. Substitution can have a big impact
on a market and will have a huge profitability impact and should therefore be considered when
evaluating the attractiveness of an industry.
 The threat of substitution from the electronic provider by the unorganized sector is high
 Competition from the low-cost producing nations like china, UK,

4. Suppliers power

This force analyses the power and control that a supplier has to (potentially) raise its prices or
to reduce the quality of products or services. Important factors that play a role are the
availability of substitute and the concentration of suppliers. The less suppliers the more power
to control the market other Factors include switching costs, the availability of substitutes, the
strength of their distribution channels, and the differentiation in the product or service.

 Low cost of labor.

 Importance of volume to suppliers is very high
 Cost relative to total purchases in industry is low
 Thus, bargaining power of suppliers is low.
5. Competitive RIVALRY

The rivalry between existing competitors is examined by how many existing competitors
there are in a market and what their capability are rivalry is high in a market with
competitors that are approximately of the same size and their offering is roughly the same.

 Brand identity is high

 Fixed costs are high in this industry
 Exit barriers are also high for the national level operations
 Thus, the competitive rivalry in this industry is high.
