STORIES:
TRADITIONAL
THEATER IN
SOUTHEAST
ASIA
Theater in Southeast Asia includes many traditional
performances that tell stories through acting, singing,
music, dance, and sometimes puppetry. Each country in
Southeast Asia has unique theater styles that reflect its
culture, beliefs, and history. For example:
In Indonesia, there’s wayang kulit, shadow puppet theater
that uses intricately carved puppets to act out stories.

These performances are more than just entertainment; they are a

way for each culture to preserve and celebrate its traditions,
values, and storytelling.

SIGNIFICANCE AND RITUALS

Spiritual Connection: Wayang Kulit is often seen as a bridge between the human
world and the spirit world. Performances are sometimes used to communicate with
ancestors or seek blessings and protection. The puppeteer, known as the dalang, is
considered a spiritual guide who understands these connections.

Rituals Before the Show: Important preparations and rituals are done before a
Wayang Kulit show, especially during religious ceremonies, harvest festivals, or
celebrations. The dalang may say prayers, make offerings, and bless the puppets to
bring positive energy and ensure a successful performance.

WAYANG KULIT
Wayang Kulit is a traditional shadow puppet theater from
Indonesia, especially popular in Java and Bali. In Wayang
Kulit, flat leather puppets are intricately carved and
painted, then held up behind a lit screen to cast shadows.
The puppeteer, called the dalang, moves the puppets and
tells the story, making the characters come to life with
voices, music, and sound effects.

Wayang Kulit is more than just a show; it’s a way for

Indonesians to pass down stories, teach moral values, and
connect with their culture and spirituality.

6
WAYANG GOLEK IN SUNDA
Wayang Golek is a traditional wooden puppet theater
from the Sundanese culture in West Java, Indonesia.
Unlike Wayang Kulit, which uses flat leather puppets and
shadows, Wayang Golek uses three-dimensional wooden
puppets that are carved, painted, and dressed in colorful
costumes.

a puppetry form that uses doll puppets without a screen

Wayang Golek performances are usually accompanied by

a Sundanese gamelan orchestra, which plays traditional
instruments like gongs and drums to add excitement to
the show. This art form is not only entertaining but also a
way for the Sundanese people to keep their culture,
values, and history alive.
WAYANG TOPENG IN INDONESIA

Wayang Topeng, also known as

“masked theater,” is a traditional
Indonesian performance art where
actors wear colorful masks (topeng)
and costumes to portray different
characters. Unlike Wayang Kulit
(shadow puppets) or Wayang Golek
(wooden puppets), Wayang Topeng
uses live actors who dance and act
out stories on stage.
8
WAYANG WONG IN BALI

Wayang Wong is a traditional dance-

drama from Bali where live actors, rather
than puppets, perform stories from Hindu
epics like the Ramayana. In Wayang
Wong, actors wear detailed costumes and
masks, each representing different
characters such as heroes, kings, or
demons. Unlike other forms of wayang
(like Wayang Kulit and Wayang Golek),
Wayang Wong combines acting, dancing,
and martial arts to bring the story to life.

traditional Vietnamese art form that features
puppets that appear to dance on water.
The puppets are made of wood and are

typically played with instruments like the
đàn bầu (monochord) and trống (drums),
which enhances the storytelling.
