Adverb is one of the four main parts of


speech,along with nouns,adjectives,and verbs, that
provides greater description to a verb, adjective or
another adverb. It can also additionally modify
prepositional phrases,subordinate clauses, and
complete sentences.

Here are the examples. The adverbs are italicized.

1. Carl and Adrian spoke boastfully.


2. Soon they argued and fought in front of their
friends.
3. They met outside the school campus.

Types of Adverbs

There are five main kinds of adverbs each


answering a different question. They include:
 Adverbs of Manner – tells us the way how
something is done or happened. It usually
answers the question how?

Tom drives quickly.


She slowly opened the door.
Mary waited for him patiently.

 Adverbs of Time- it tells us the time when


or what time something is done . It
answers the question when?

The meeting is next week.


Yesterday, we decided to take a walk.
Ive already bought my tickets for the
Concerts.

These adverbs are used with othert time


expressions such as days of the week. The most
common adverbs of time includes yet, already,
tomorrow, next week ( or month or year), last week
(or month or year), now, and ago.

 Adverbs of Place- it tell us the place where


something happens.
It usually answers the question where?

Here is the answer.


I saw your pen there.
She went upstairs.

Adverbs of place can be confused with


prepositional phrases such as in the doorway or at
the shop. Prepositional phrases indicate where
something is , but adverbs of place can tell you
where something occurs,such as here and there.

 Adverbs of Degree- tell us how much does


something happens. It answers the
question , to what extent?

How hard is your homework?


Its not so hard.
Its fairly hard.
Its very hard.
Its extremely hard.
Its completely terrifying!

 Adverb of frequency- tell us how often


something is repeatedly done.Words used
as adverbs of frequency include
always, sometimes, often, occasionally, rarely,
seldom, sometimes, twice, daily, never, etc.

She rarely go to parties.


I often read a newspaper.
He usually gets up at 6 o clock.
