of in-text citations in a
research paper.
b. Recognize the
difference between MLA
and APA style in-text
citations.
c. Write sentences using
in-text citations with the
correct formatting
according to MLA or
APA
a. define a Technical Definition and Operational Definition;
b. determine the purpose of giving Technical and Operational definitions; and
c. identify the difference between Technical Definition and Operational
Definition.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Give Technical and Operational Definition
Reference/s:
Materials: LCD Monitor, PowerPoint Presentation
Skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
Please stand for the prayer. May I
request the prayer leader to be in front. (The prayer leader will lead the prayer.)
2. Greetings
Good morning, class!
3. Classroom Management Good morning, Ma’am!

happens, life must go on. Alright?
6. Sharing of quotes/proverbs Yes, Ma’am.
7. Review of the Previous Lesson
What was our topic last meeting?
We discussed about Bibliography ma’am.
Good job!
What is Bibliography? Preparing bibliographies helps researchers
keep track of the sources they consulted or
cited for their written material and gives
readers a framework of how the writers'
arguments were formed.

Correct!
It can help the readers find more information

Impressive!

8. Checking of Assignments None, Ma’am.

Do you have an assignment to submit?
Okay, thank you.

B. Activity
Class, before we are going to
start our discussion let’s have an
activity first. The game that we are
going to play is called “I know what
you’re talking about”.

In this game, I will be showing you

definitions of items, concepts or ideas
and you will guess what is it that is
being defined. The items, concepts
and ideas are those that are relatable to
you. Are you ready for our activity Yes Ma’am!
class?

and evolves through growth. Life ma’am
What is the answer?
Great job!

C. Analysis
Wow! It seems that you are good at
giving definitions. Very good, class.

In the previous activity, I asked you to

identify what is asked or described in
the screen. What do you call the act of

Good job!

How about the statement that gives the A definition ma’am.

meaning of a term?
Excellent!

When we give the meaning of a

particular term, we are defining that
term. While the statement that we use
to give meaning to a term is called a
definition.

These concepts are highly important to

our discussion for today because we
are going to talk about Technical and
Operational Definitions.

In what part of the research paper can

we use the Technical and Operational
Definitions? Definition of Terms Ma’am.

Very good!

Technical Definitions
 Technical definitions are
definitions that are found in
dictionaries. It refers to the aspect
of explaining or describing any
technical terms or terminology. It
is a very detailed description of a
term, process, or phenomenon.
Technical definitions have two
types namely parenthetical and
sentence definition.

1. Parenthetical definition –
defines a term by using more
familiar synonym in
parenthesis.
Example:
A research study must have a
framework (outline) to guide the
researchers.

2. Sentence definition – follows a

set pattern and more complex
terms are used.

Example:
Statistics – is a branch of
mathematics that deals with the
collection, analysis, interpretation,
and presentation of numerical data.
Yes, Ma’am!
Remember class that sentence
definitions are more complex than
parenthetical definitions. It defines
technical term by identifying the
class where that term belongs, and
it gives the differentiating
characteristics of that term.

When writing a technical

definition, there are guidelines that
needs to be followed.

Guidelines in writing a Technical

Definition:
1. Be accurate (use precise terms)
2. Be objective (use facts, not
opinions)
3. Grade your language (match
the language to the knowledge
of your readers)
Yes, ma’am!
Let’s now talk about the second
type of definition.

Anyone who would like to read?

Operational Definition
 Is the specific meaning of a word
or phrase given to it by the group
of people who use the word in
their specific context. It is more on
the application of the word. It
gives an obvious, precise, and
communicable meaning to a
concept that is used to ensure
comprehensive knowledge of the
idea by specifying how the idea is
used and applied withing a
particular set of circumstances.

There are three types of

Operational Definitions:
1. Type A – definitions are
constructed in terms of the
operations performed to cause
the phenomenon to occur.
Example:
Fear – is a feeling produced by
exposing oneself to an object or a
phenomenon.
2. Type B – definitions can be
constructed in terms of how
the particular object or thing
operates.
Example: Monitor is a television
receiver used in a studio to
select/verify the picture being
broadcast from a particular
camera.
3. Type C – definitions are
constructed in terms of what an
object or phenomenon looks
like.
Example: Anxiety – is a state of
feeling worries that sometimes
results to excessive pulse rate or
high heartbeat.

Okay class, always remember that

technical definitions are

is a very detailed description of a

Operational definition on the other

hand is more on the application of
the word. It is the specific meaning
of a word or phrase given to it by
the group of people who use the
word in their specific context. It
refers to how the word is used,
what it looks like and to what field
it is used. Operational definition
also has 3 types.

Do you understand, class?

Okay, very good.

E. Application

Okay class, it seems to me that you

have already familiarized yourselves
with the concepts related to technical
and operational definitions.

I have here example definitions and

what you will do is you will identify
whether the given definition is a
technical or an operational definition.
Just simply raise your hand if you
want to answer and you will get
additional points if your answer is
correct.

Are my instructions clear?

1. A computer is a device used to

process and store data. – Technical
2. A computer is a device that is used
to help students in completing
their academic tasks. – Operational
3. Abstraction is the process of
generalizing an idea. – Technical
4. 4. Abstraction a process in lesson
planning in which the teacher
helps the learners to look at the
bigger picture and eventually
generalize the topic. – Operational
5. An oval is a shape having a
rounded and slightly elongated
