QUESTION 1

The dimensions of an edge beam are 450 mm deep by 250 mm wide with a flange
thickness (slab) of 150 mm. The beam must support a 270 mm wide cavity wall, which
is in line with the outside plastered edge of the edge beam.

Reinforcement: 💮
Beam: 3Y20 tensile bars; 2Y16 compression bars and R8 binders.

Slab: Y12 main bars at 150 centres; alternate bars bent up.

Cover: R 8 distribution bars at 250 centres.

Finishes: 19 mm plaster to the sides of the beam, the bottom of the slab and
inside of the wall.

Floor: PVC tiles on 20 mm screed.

Timber skirting: 75 × 22 mm.

Use scale 1:5 and draw a vertical section through the beam and wall to clearly indicate
the position of the damp proof course and ONE tie wire.

Complete the drawing with all the labelling, dimensions and hatching key symbols. [20]

QUESTION 2

FIGURE 1 below shows a butt joint connected by means of TWO 8 mm thick connector
plates which connect to the 80 × 10 tie bars. The connection is secured with SIX M16
bolts.

💮 FIGURE 1

Calculate the following:

2.1 The shear stress if the force is 130 kN. (The bolt thread is outside the thread). (4)

2.2 The compressive stress if the force is 210 kN. (4)

2.3 The diameter of the bolt if the load is 160 kN and the shear stress is 150 MPa. (4)

on top.

💮 FIGURE 2

Calculate the following:

3.1 The position of the neutral axis from AB. (4)

3.2 The second moment of area about the neutral axis. (7)

3.3 The section modulus (z) about the neutral axis. (3)

3.4 Select a suitable channel section to replace the shaped figure. (1)

QUESTION 5

A structural steel column of 5 m high is connected to a 25 mm thick steel base plate with
TWO flange plates welded to the flanges of the steel column.

A main beam must be connected to the flange of the column while a secondary beam
💮
will be bolted to the web of the steel column. The TWO beams will be placed at the same
height.

Use scale 1:5 to draw the front view of the structural assembly with the web facing the
front.

Specifications:

Base plate: 650 × 650 × 25 mm thick

Steel column: 254 × 254 × 62,5 kg/m

Flange plates: 450 high × 10 mm thick. Welded to the flanges of the steel column.

Main beam: 406 × 140 × 38,6 kg/m placed 1 200 mm above the top of the
base plate.

Secondary beam: 246 × 146 × 37,2 kg/m placed in the centre of the web of the
column.

Rolled steel 70 × 70 × 8 angles to secure the web of the secondary beam to

angles: the steel column by means of SIX M12 bolts (3 on each side).

The completed drawing must include all the labels, dimensions and sectioning. [15]

QUESTION 6

Draw the following welding symbols:

6.1 Fillet weld both sides and all around

6.2 U-weld arrow side

6.3 V- weld arrow side

6.4 Square weld both sides

QUESTION 7 💮
7.1 State the minimum number of main bars for a round column, and state the
angle between the main bars. (2)

7.2 Name THREE types of reinforced concrete columns where a helical binder is
used. (3)

7.3 State the difference between a one-way reinforced concrete slab and a two-
way reinforced concrete slab. (3)

7.4 State any TWO purposes of a floor skirting board (2)

7.5 State the purpose of tile spacers and grouting of tiles joints. (4)
