RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

1. INTRODUCTION TO RACE EVO SYSTEM

Race EVO is a professional reprogramming software that allows to optimize, in

a simple and intuitive way, the engine working parameters stored inside the
vehicle electronic control unit (ECU).

Developed during the years following the evolution of electronics, it has been
continuously improved to support a wider and wider number of parameters.

The security of your data is guaranteed both by the presence of a USB key
(dongle) and by the structure of the internal database allowing to organize
information in a complete and effective way.

Through the use of “setting files” (BASIC or STANDARD), that filter the data
available in the ECU, the software identifies the maps controlling the propeller
on which the user can intervene to get the desired tune, whilst more
experienced users can manipulate without restrictions every data available
with the use of a versatile graphic/numeric editor.

Race EVO is available in three different configurations depending on the level

of experience of the user:

- Standard: designed for beginners. The tuning process is guided through

the mandatory use of a “setting file” (STANDARD) that also performs the
automatic checksum correction at the end of the operations. The user is
only given the ability to alter the parameters supplied by Dimsport.

- Plus: for experienced users. Besides the features allowed by Standard

version, the user can exploit additional functionalities to work freely on the
entire content of the file of the ECU, even without the use of a setting file.
Also the checksum correction can be performed through a dedicated
function free from the mandatory use of a setting file. Plus version,
moreover, through the use of a dedicated editor, allows the creation of
customized maps inside of a setting file (BASIC and/or STANDARD) thus
extending the range of parameters that can be altered according to one’s
needs.

- Plus Full: this version integrates the Plus with an additional and important
function: the possibility to create a complete “Project”. The user is given
the ability to create his very own customized database with files, maps,
formulas and to manage it freely without the need of any setting file.

8.FILE FOR RACE TECHNICAL SUPPORT

- FILE .DS

This chapter treats two of the most important functions the user will find
himself using for the correct dispatch of files and information to the RACE
Technical Support.

When it’s necessary to send to the RACE Technical Support a file of a vehicle
for the creation of a new setting file or to find a matching one, the user has at
his disposal the function:

This operation allows to access the device memory to select the desired file.
After the file selection, a new window will open showing the recap of the
vehicle data:

If the vehicle had been read out using Manufacturer-Model-Type, all the
information in the relative fields will be automatically filled by the program.
If, instead, the file has been read out using only the protocol, the user will
need to specify, in the text box, the vehicle details. Entering all the information
of the vehicle will help the RACE Technical Support to supply a faster service.
By pressing ‘OK’ the program will then create a file with this format:
Cxxxx_GENIUS.ds.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 17 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

The file exported with this procedure is encrypted. Only RACE Technical
Support can decipher this format.

If Microsoft Outlook is installed as

the default mail client on the User’s PC,
by clicking ‘YES’ to the following
message, the program will create
automatically an e-mail message
with the recipient already specified.

Instead, if the user is using a web mail client (e.g.: Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) it will
be simply necessary to attach the file with extension .ds to the message and
send it to the RACE Technical Support address: [email protected].

- LOG FILE

NewGenius is capable of recording every single operation carried out during

the communication with the vehicle. Every operation is stored in specific files
called LOG.
These LOG files are essential to find a solution to possible communication
problems between the device and the vehicle.

To extract LOG files the user can use the NewGenius menu inside RACE:

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 18 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

The files stored inside the unit memory are sorted by date and time of creation
and protocol used. It will be enough to select only those relating to the vehicle
that generated the error and send them to RACE Technical Support.
As for the .ds files, also for the LOG ones RACE offers the possibility to wither
extract them to disc (by selecting the destination folder) or to send an email
automatically generated by the system if Microsoft Outlook is installed on the
user’s PC.

Both operations, exportation of the file read off the vehicle and the extraction
of LOG files, can be performed also by extracting the files directly from the
device memory through the dedicated menu:

9. SETTING FILE

Setting files (also called “drivers”) are an essential part in the use of the RACE
EVO program.
These files are made of the readings of stock vehicles carried out by Dimsport
clients. The work at RACE technical support is to open all the main engine
management maps (sometimes also the secondary ones depending on the ECU
type) and to set correctly all the parameters to allow the use inside the RACE
EVO. Setting files are created, updated and published in the online Dimsport
database by the staff of RACE technical support.

The download of a setting files may be carried out through the user’s reserved
area (see chapter 5) or directly from the inside of RACE EVO.
By selecting a file from the local database of RACE EVO and pressing the
button located to the right of the screen a guided procedure will start.

N.B.: setting files downloaded from the database, that were not created
specifically for the file the user is working on, must be used only to open and
compare the maps inside RACE EVO but never to make the tuning that will be
installed in the vehicle. There are some exceptions to this general rule, please
consult the dedicated protocol manuals to know what these exception are.

RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

Users with RACE EVO STANDARD will only be able to download the
STANDARD version of the setting file. Those, instead, with RACE EVO PLUS
can choose to download between the BASIC (only hex code and 2D graphics)
or the STANDARD (maps, hex code and 2D graphics) versions of the setting
file. For both versions of RACE EVO, the user can download anyway the
OPTIONS if the ecu type supports it (we remind you that the download of the
OPTIONS is dependent on the prior subscription of an annual or lifetime
contract allowing the use of the same credits normally used to download
setting file. Users without one of the afore mentioned subscriptions can
purchase OPTIONS using the credit card payment system PayPal).

In this section the user can preview the maps and eventual OPTIONS available
in the setting file by pressing the button ‘Maps’.

10. OPERATING SEQUENCE

Let’s analyze the sequence of operations the user will have to carry out to
perform the modification of a file read from an ECU.

After consulting the Application List and selecting the most appropriate
method of connection depending on his needs, the user will find himself to
select the correct setting file that allows to clearly view the engine
management maps. There are different approaches to the correct selection of
the setting file:

1- The user can autonomously try to search the local database of RACE for
an available setting file matching exactly the identification numbers3.
Using the button ‘Search for Setting File…’ through the menu ‘Tools’ a
window will open where it is possible to manually enter the identification
numbers of the vehicle.

Also, using a file read with NewGenius and therefore containing the
‘header’ file with all the information of the vehicle, it will be possible to
load it directly through the specific button

The fields Hardware number, Software number, Upgrade software

number and protocol will be automatically compiled for an easier
identification of the setting file.

3
Dimsport recommend to always carry out the modifications on the file coming from the read of the vehicle ECU,
except special cases or where otherwise indicated. For any doubt we invite You to contact the RACE Technical Support.

RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

If a setting file matching the same identification numbers is already

present in the database , the user can download it using the button
located to the bottom left of the window.

- File Join File…

This function allows to import a file in RACE EVO directly from the SD card of
the NewGenius unit or from a directory in the Pc:

Using a file read with NewGenius, therefore containing the ‘header’, RACE will
automatically search its database for a setting file with the same ID
parameters and, if there’s one available, will display the setting file on screen.

RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

From this screen it is possible to open the file using the button ‘Join’. Users
with RACE Plus or Plus Full can also use the button ‘Analysis’ to open the file
with the function ‘Image Analysis’.

The user will asked to assign a name to the image file.

The next message, by clicking ‘Yes’, gives the possibility to select another one
of the files available in the setting file for loading RAM 1 or 2.

Instead, by clicking ‘No’, RACE will automatically load RAM 1 and 2 only with
the user’s file.

if the file that is being imported does not contain the ‘header’, RACE will
automatically open it in the section ‘Image Analysis’. (Not available for RACE
Standard).

The same type of operation can also be performed by simply dragging a file
(with or without ‘header’) inside the main screen of RACE EVO.

2- In case no file with a matching ID is present, the user is invited to send

the file to RACE Technical Support. Our technicians will create a new
setting file opening all the engine management maps. The new file
created will then be made available in the online databank on Dimsport
website.
Setting files downloaded off the online databank must be saved in the
path C:\Race2000\INTERNET without modifying the original name. to
import a setting file in the software the procedure is:

RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

Following the case previously described by point number 1, after the download
of the file directly from inside the program and having pressed the button
, a new window will open where the user can join his file to the
original file from the setting file:

While following the case exposed on point number 2, after importing the
setting file inside RACE, the user will have to open the database and select
Manufacturer-Model-Type of the vehicle and press ‘Next’.

The next screen will show all the setting files available for the selected type. All
the setting files that have been imported inside RACE are marked with the

green check symbol in the column P; the column Type, instead, will show
identify the type of setting file download (BAS = Basic; STD = Standard).
Press ‘Next’ to proceed.

- If the file has been read out with NewGenius the user will be able to
import it directly from inside the memory of the unit using the specific
button located at the bottom right of the page:

- If, instead, the file has been saved to the disk (either reading performed
with NewGenius and file exported to disk from the SD memory card or
reading carried out with NewTrasdata) the user will be able to import it
using the dedicated button:

After performing either one of the operations afore mentioned, the screen of
RACE will be as follows:

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 26 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

It is good to remember that the reprogramming of the vehicle should always

happen through the modification of the file coming from its ECU. With the
exception of some special cases, the original file stored inside of a setting file
created by Dimsport but not on the same file of the ECU the user is working
with (in this case we call it compatibility of files), must never be used to
reflash the ECU of the vehicle otherwise it could not function properly.

The two files listed have to be loaded into the RAM virtual memories to be able
to access the map list. Let’s analyze case by case how to proceed:

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 27 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

- CASE 1: stock vehicle – matching setting file

Let’s assume the user knows that the vehicle he is about to modify is original
and there’s a matching setting file available in the database.
The user can load the original of the setting file in RAM 1 and the file from the
vehicle in RAM 2.

In the bottom left corner of the screen we can see the recap of which files have
been loaded in each one of the virtual memories. By pressing ‘OK’ RACE will
then display the screen with the list of maps available for the modification.

RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

- CASE 2: stock vehicle – new setting file created

If there is no setting file matching the identification numbers of the vehicle, the
user will need to send the file read out to the RACE Technical Support. The
staff of the Technical Support will create a new setting file using the file of the
vehicle.
The user, after downloading the new setting file created from the online
databank and importing it in the software, can proceed to load RAM 1 and RAM
2 just with the original file of the vehicle using the button ‘Load 1 and 2’

This operation is possible because the original file of the setting file matches
exactly the file from the vehicle (it is also correct to point out that the same
operation can be carried out loading RAM 1 and 2 with the original file of the
setting file).

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 29 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

- CASE 3: modified vehicle – matching setting file

We remind you that Dimsport does not build any setting file using modified
files.
The user, if in doubt about the originality of the vehicle, can send the file to
RACE Technical Support for analysis. If there is a matching setting file that
allows to view the maps correctly, RACE Technical Support will inform the
client, through email, indicating the data of the file he needs to download.
Otherwise, if it’s impossible to find a matching setting file for the correct view
of the maps, the user will be encouraged to take the vehicle to the dealership
and have its ECU software updated so to bring it back to a stock condition.

If there is a matching setting file available, the user will have to load RAM 1
with the original file of the setting file and RAM 2 with the file of the vehicle.

This operation will allow the user to clearly view the differences that were
applied to each of the maps available in the setting file. If the user has RACE
configured as Plus will also be able to view the possible alterations present in
areas of the file that are not declared in the form of a map.

Dimsport advise against the use of the original file of the setting file to
reprogram the vehicle to stock conditions. It is necessary to clear the
modifications applied to the file coming from the ECU of the vehicle.

11. HOW TO MODIFY A MAP

Let’s analyze the functions and methods that can be used to manipulate a map
inside RACE EVO.

First of all it’s necessary to make a distinction between one-dimensional and

two-dimensional maps.

- One-dimensional map

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 31 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

This type of maps is characterized by the presence of only one row of values
and no 3D graphics.

- Two-dimensional map

These maps have values represented by a Cartesian chart. The 3D chart is

available too.

To quickly display the 3D chart press the button F4 on the keyboard or

through the path ViewShow 3D graph.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 32 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

For both map types, when the view is set on RAM 2, the buttons to allow the
modification will activate.

Let’s see in detail the modification functions in the toolbar:

This text box contains a prefixed value, that can be

manually edited, and allows the increment or subtraction of the input value by
using the buttons with the symbols . The user can decide to apply an
absolute or percentage value by selecting one of the relative buttons .

This button is used to enter a fixed value in one or more selected cells.
Used together with the buttons (in order to use these buttons it’s
necessary to prior disable the option ‘Conversion formula’ when present)

it allows to enter a fixed absolute or percentage value.

‘Floor sum’ function: by selecting a group of cells (at least four cells
selected) it is possible to define the values of the four corners of the selection.
The program automatically will interpolate the defined values to fill the rest of
the selection.
This function is normally used when a gradual modification is required.
This function can also be applied either to a single row or column of at least
two cells.

RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

Example:

Let’s assume we want to increase the map with a minimum value of 3% up to

a maximum of 8%.

The next screenshot shows the interpolation of values among the four
extremes of the selection performed by the program:

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 34 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

‘Copy/paste’ buttons (Windows combo ‘Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V’ can also be

used): allow to copy the values in a map, or a part of them, and paste them in
another one. This function becomes useful when the user is in possess of a
modified file and wants to reproduce it on another original file of the same
type; it’s recommendable to open two instances of the program to easily
perform this operation.

We also remind you that it is possible to manipulate values by directly acting

on the 2D graph. This method is above all useful when working on a one-
dimensional map.
To better control the increase (or subtraction) of values we suggest you to set
the view on ‘Percentage difference (Ctrl+R)’ (first disable the conversion
formula if present):

Now the user just needs to select one of the dots of the graph and drag it to
see the values change in real time:

Items marked as ‘patch’ ([EGR0], [SOFF], [SPAB], etc…) or the ‘Options’ can
be enabled with a simple double-click.

12. HOW TO EXPORT A MOD FILE

At the end of the tuning operations on the file, it is possible to export the
modified file directly from the working screen.
The first step requires the user to save his work using one of the two options
available from the menu ‘File’:

to overwrite the file in use

to save a new file

If a file has been read out with the NewGenius unit, it is possible to export the
file directly into the device memory from this path:

It is also possible to export the file directly to the disc using the other button
available in the same menu:

Both operations can also be performed from the screen of the file selection:

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 36 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

The button ‘Save File to disk’ will start a guided export procedure.
The first step requires the user to select the scrambling mode for the file4.
Press ‘OK’ to continue.

The final size of the file is automatically set by RACE.

The next step will ask the user whether he wishes to create a file for
NewTrasdata or not:

4
This function can only be used for very old ECU types. On more recent ECU types where the engine management
maps are stored either in the microprocessor or in the flash memory, this function cannot be used.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 37 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

This operation won’t alter in any way the content of the file being exported.
Its sole function, when selecting one of the four available options, will be to
only rename the file with the specific extension indicated between (.).

At the end of the operations the user can select the destination folder where to
save the file.

13. HOW TO USE THE TOOL ‘SEARCH FOR CHECKSUM’

This function is only available for those users who purchased RACE EVO
configured either as Plus or Plus Full.
In case a file has been modified using a different editing software, before
reprogramming the vehicle, is advisable to verify the goodness of the
checksum using this tool.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 38 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

By clicking on the button located to the right of the field ‘Field to verify’ it will
be possible to select the folder where the file to be verified is stored.

After loading the file, press the button ‘Search’ to allow RACE to detect the file
most suitable checksum algorithm from the list of its internal database.
If the checksum of the file is not properly calculated, a warning message will
pop up; the algorithm detected by RACE is identified by the color red and in
one or all the check boxes ‘S’, ‘C’ or ‘Co’ a prohibition sign will appear. The
check box with the symbol ‘=’ won’t be flagged.

Pres ‘OK’ to clear the message and then press the button

For certain types of files it is also necessary to calculate the optional

checksums.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 39 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

This is an extremely important operation and it’s mandatory to perform it in

order to allow the vehicle to function properly.

At the end of the calculation operation, if successful, RACE will save a new file
with the extension ‘_CALC_Exx’.
The file name can eventually be changed at one’s discretion.

Now, selecting the new file calculated and pressing again ‘Search’, it will be
possible to see the algorithm correctly detected and all four check boxes ‘S’,
‘C’, ‘Co’ and ‘=’ identified by a green tick confirming the goodness of the
operation.

14. IMAGE ANALYSIS

In this chapter we’ll quickly treat another important function only available for
RACE EVO Plus and Plus Full.

This function allows the user to work on a file without needing a setting file.
To enter the function:

The main screen of the function shows the list of all the files stored in the local
database of RACE. The files in electric blue are the original files contained in
each setting file downloaded by the user.

Together with the regular buttons for loading the files in the virtual RAM, it’s
available the button that allows to select a specific Manufacturer-
Model-Type to display only the files contained in the selection.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 41 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

As this function does not have any restrictions (protocol, checksum algorithm,
file size…) that normally are applied to the file when using a setting file, it will
not be possible to import a file directly from the unit NewGenius. The user can
only import a file through the button ‘Load File from disk’.

The user can import any file he wants with any size too. Needless to say that
to compare two files the same file size is required.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 42 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

When loading the file in RAM 1 and 2, RACE will not show any map but only
the ‘HEX/Text code’ and the ‘2D Eprom Graphic’.

As you can see, to the left of the screen where normally the setting file
information are, in this function there is no information displayed.

N.B.
Users with RACE EVO Plus Full have the possibility to use this function to
create a complete ‘Project’: they can create customized maps and formulas
and also create and manage a personalized Manufacturer-Model-Type database
that integrates the one already available in RACE.
To know how to create a ‘Project’ please refer to the specific user manual.

At the end of the tuning operations the user will have to save the file through
the same buttons that can be found in the setting file working area:

to overwrite the file in use

to save a new file

Before the saving operation is completed, RACE will give the user the
possibility to recalculate the checksum by displaying automatically the ‘Search
for checksum…’ function.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 43 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

The ‘Image Analysis’ function does not update the checksum automatically
every time the user saves a modification on the maps.

The file saved using ‘Image Analysis’ will then be only available in the database
of this function but unavailable in the regular database of RACE.

To export the modified file created the user can use the button
This operation starts the guided procedure as seen on page 26 but there will
be no possibility to create a file for NewTrasdata.

15. MENU TOOLS

The final chapter is dedicated to some other non-essential but useful functions
the user can use during his experience with the software.

- Search for Image File

Through the menu ‘Tools’  ‘Search for Image File’ (shortcut Ctrl+F11)
the user can search the local database of RACE for any file that is stored in it.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 44 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

Unlike the function ‘Search for Setting File’, this function allows to search for
and open any image file stored in the database but not in the form of a setting
file.

- ECU Identification

This tool was mainly used in the past to detect ID numbers for some specific
old ECU types:

It’s simply necessary to select the desired ECU type, press ‘OK’ and then select
the file from the directory to get the information needed:

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 45 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

- File Tools

File HHH/LLL:

Some old ECU types used to have 2 Eprom memories containing each one
some of the maps managing the engine.
These functions allow to merge two files together in order to get a single file
that can be used in RACE and, viceversa, to split one file in two single files with
half the size of the total one and needed to reprogram each Eprom memory.

The files used in this kind of ECUs are generally referred to as HIGH-BYTE
(HHH) and LOW-BYTE (LLL).

File resize:

New function introduced with RACE EVO version 7.06.511 allowing to

manipulate the size of a file.

By using a file read with NewGenius, therefore with header, the user simply
needs to select one of the two options available and RACE EVO will
automatically compile the fields relating to Start Address, Partial size and
Full Size.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 46 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

Let’s take as example a partial file read with FLASH_0365 from a SEAT LEON
(1P) 1.6L 16V TDI 77kW PCR2.1 CONTINENTAL that we need to
transform into a full size file.

The image above shows the data relating to the size of the file we input
(Partial Size), the Full Size this type of files has and the Start Address from
which the protocol has read the data from the ECU. To obtain a full file, in this
case, we just need to click OK.

By pressing OK again to the next message, RACE EVO will create a file with
the same name but adding the extension ‘_T’ indicating the transformation
into a TOTAL file, or viceversa the extension ‘_P’ when transforming a full file
into partial. The file resulting from this process will split from its header, also
available in the destination folder.

The operation performed by RACE EVO when transforming a partial file into
total, is filling the address zones of difference with FFFFFF bytes.

Dimsport srl – 15020 Serralunga di Crea (AL) - Italy- Tel. +39 0142 9552 – WEB : www.dimsport.com - 47 -
RACE EVO - OPERATING MANUAL VER 2.12

When using a NewGenius file from which the header has been removed during
the exportation to the disk, the procedure requires an additional step:
selecting the file will not automatically compile the fields. The user needs to
press the button ‘Read Data from File’ and then select the header file
previously exported:

If the user does not have a valid NewGenius file, therefore without header, it
will be up to him to know and enter the correct information about the file size
and the start address in order to complete the operation.

Encoding/Decoding

This tool allows the user to apply the necessary encoding/decoding to a file
when using an Eprom burner.

Select the source file and the type of encoding from the list. Select then the
desired operation to get a new file that will be used to reprogram an Eprom
(when applying an encoding) or inside RACE EVO (in case of decoding).
