THAPPAD
Releasing in 2020, Anubhav Sinha's "Thappad" is a powerful
exploration of domestic violence and its profound impact on women's lives. The film revolves around Amrita (Taapsee Pannu), a housewife who is still in deep trouble after her husband Vikram (Pavil Gulati) slaps her at a social event. While the incident is initially dismissed as a trivial mistake by both Vikram and those around them, it serves as a catalyst for Amrita’s journey toward self-realization and justice. "Thappad" masterfully dissects the normalization of domestic violence in society, challenging the notion that such incidents are mere misunderstandings or minor lapses in judgment. Through Amrita’s story, the film underscores the profound psychological and emotional impact of domestic abuse, illustrating how even a single act of violence can undermine a person's sense of self-worth and autonomy. The film's portrayal of Amrita's decision to file for divorce highlights the courage required to confront and challenge societal norms that often excuse or trivialize such behavior. The film's depiction of domestic violence is supported by extensive research and real- life data. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), many women in India experience domestic violence, reflecting societal attitudes that perpetuate the cycle of abuse. TPD is consistent with findings that even single violent incidents can have long-term effects on mental health and well-being, reinforcing the need for systemic change. Government programs such as the "Women's Protection against Domestic Violence Act" (PWDVA) and the "One Stop Center" program aim to provide legal and psychological support to victims of violence. house. Although these frameworks provide protections and important resources, their effectiveness is hampered by poor implementation and limited access, especially in rural and minority communities. Legal interventions have become increasingly aware of the dangers of domestic violence. The Supreme Court upheld the definition of domestic violence as a serious violation of human rights. Court decisions highlight the need to strengthen protection laws and support systems for victims, and to strengthen the legal framework to combat domestic violence. In my opinion, "Thappad" has contributed a lot to the discourse on equality and domestic violence. The film is about Amrita's journey that challenges the prevalence of domestic violence and advocates a cultural revolution to understand and address these issues with realism. This is a powerful message about the need for legal and social change to ensure that domestic violence is recognized as a violation of human rights. Emphasizing the importance of respect and equality in relationships, "Thappad" calls for a re-evaluation of social attitudes and a stronger commitment to support the rights and dignity of women. If I have to describe the movie ‘Thappad‘ in one word, it would be ‘excellent‘. It is excellent in many ways, especially for the Indian audience. It shows the life of upper-middle-class housewives in India. It focuses on their roles, responsibilities, and the sacrifices they have to make. It beautifully represents the bond between a daughter and her father. It challenges the traditional way of suppressing a woman’s desires and her happiness for the family. It is straight and blunt on your face. It hits you hard if you are a male, and forces you to calibrate and think on your beliefs and your ignorant behavior towards your mom, sister, wife, and girlfriend.
