Home automation system achieved great popularity in the last decades and it increases
the comfort and quality of life. In this project an overview of current and emerging home
automation systems is discussed. Nowadays most home automation systems consist of a
smartphone and microcontroller. A smart phone application is used to control and monitor the
home appliances using different type of communication techniques. In this project the working
principle of different type of wireless communication techniques such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and
GSM are studied and their features are compared with each other so the users can choose
their own choice of technology to build home automation system. More over in this research
work the survey of different home automation systems is discussed and their advantages.
The modern home automation system gives security and blissful life at residence. That
is why the popularity of using home automation technology is increasing day by day. Our
paper proposed the design and implementation of home automation, monitoring, and home
security through the bluthooth. Our system focuses on the residence to make a smart wireless
home security system that sends an email with a picture to the homeowner if any trespass
enters into the residence and also gives an alarm if any fire accident happened. Our system
can control and monitor the house temperature, humidity, flame condition and all home
devices from anywhere. To update data our system takes just 3 seconds. As a result, a
concern person can take necessary steps rapidly. Our system can be controlled via many
ways like the smartphone, voice control and electrical switch. Our proposed method has a
small cost design, user flexible interface and simple installation in a house. Through Bluthooth
technology, the user can minimize the wastage of electrical power by proper monitoring and
controlling.

2. Introduction

Home Automation involves introducing a degree of computerized or automatic control

of a certain electrical and electronic system in a building and home. A home automation system
is a system or software that connects and controls smart devices in home or building. It can be
programmed to function automatically or remotely and can perform various functions such as
lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation, watering, and scheduling. It can be operated by a hub, a
smartphone, an app, or a voice assistant. A home automation system can make a home more
convenient and intelligent.

(Fig. 2.1)

Home Automation enables you to use your home's Lighting, Heating and home
appliances (such as washing machines, dishwashers and tumble driers) more conveniently
and efficiently. And, at the same time giving you greater levels of comfort and security. Home
automation or domestics is building automation for a home, called a smart home or smart
house. A home automation system will monitor and/or control home attributes such as
lighting, climate, entertainment systems, and appliances. It may also include home security
such as access control and alarm systems. When connected with the Internet Home

9
automation has high potential for sharing data between family members or trusted individuals
for personal security and could lead to energy saving measures with a positive environmental
impact in the future. While there are many competing vendors, there are increasing efforts
towards open-source systems. However, there are issues with the current state of home
automation including a lack of standardized security measures and deprecation of older
devices without backwards compatibility. Home automation can quickly bring the future in to
our homes by incorporating security, climate, and household gadgets and transforms our
regular home into a futuristic smart home. These smart home systems can be used for simple
or elaborate tasks by integrating devices and gadgets inside and outside of your home. A
simple definition for home automation is the ability to do tasks automatically and monitor or
change status remotely. Common tasks include turning off lights when no one is in the room,
locking doors via smartphone, automates air condition systems that can sense and memorize
temperature settings and appliances that help you reduce the time you spend in the kitchen.
Home Automation is automation of home, housework or household activity. In
otherwards it refers to use of IT/computer to control home appliances. It integrates electrical
devices in a house with each other. For example: It can include centralized control of lighting,
appliances, security lock of gates & doors to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy,
efficiency and safety. In today's IT world, home automation is being popular due to easiness,
flexible means of viewing/monitoring and controlling the appliances and other things
according to users’ comfort and needs. The challenging parties in simplicity and cost of
installing them in home and varies with increasing number of services to be monitored and
controlled. This project named 'HOME AUTOMATION’ is idea of home automation using
Arduino. The popularity of home automation has been increasing greatly in recent years due
to considerable affordability and simplicity through smartphone and tablet connectivity.

3. Literature Review

➢ Home automation is the automatic control of electronic devices in your home. These
devices are connected to the Internet, which allows them to be controlled remotely. With
home automation, devices can trigger one another so you don't have to control them
manually via an app or voice assistant.

➢ Security - We all lead busy lives, with almost all members of a home heading off to
work or school. This means our empty homes become vulnerable to attacks if the right
measures aren’t taken.

➢ Management - A home automation system helps you manage your home well.

➢ Efficiency - Your devices can enhance your life experiences.

What are the benefits?

➢ The benefits of home automation include safety, convenience, control, comfort, and
energy savings.

➢ Home automation increases safety and security by letting you create a chain reaction
from one single event such as someone walking up to your porch.

➢ Home automation is convenient and creates comforting routines that can improve
peace of mind.

11

17
5.2. Relay Channel:
A Relay is a simple electromechanical switch. While we use normal switches to close
or open a circuit manually, a Relay is also a switch that connects or disconnects two circuits.
But instead of a manual operation, a relay uses an electrical signal to control an
electromagnet, which in turn connects or disconnects another circuit.

(Fig. 5.2.1. Relay Channel)

Relays can be of different types like electromechanical, solid state. Electromechanical

relays are frequently used. Let us see the internal parts of this relay before knowing about it
working. Although many different types of relays were present, their working is same. it works
on the principle of electromagnetic induction When the electromagnet is applied with some
current, it induces a magnetic field around its A switch is used to apply DC current to the load.
In the relay, Copper coil and the iron core acts as electromagnet. When the coil is applied
with DC current, it starts attracting the contact as shown. This is called energizing of relay.
When the supply is removed it retrieves back to the original position. This is called De

18
energizing of relay.

The 4 Channel Relay Module is a convenient board which can be used to control high
voltage, high current load such as motor, solenoid valves, lamps and AC load. It is designed
to interface with microcontroller such as Arduino, PIC and etc. The relay module function is
mainly to switch electrical devices and systems on or off. It also serves to isolate the control
circuit from the device or system being controlled. Home automation relays are trigger devices
that will activate another appliance. This could be a light fixture or a garage door. You can
use smart home automation relay modules in many different situations to make your home
more interconnected.

(Fig. 5.2.2. Circuit Diagram of Relay)

How Does Relay Channel Work?

In order for a relay to operate, it needs three basic components: a coil of wire,
a switch that can open a circuit, and a set of contacts. When the relay is not being used,
electricity flows through the coil of wire and then back to the battery. The key component of a

19
relay is the switch which can interrupt this flow of electricity. It does this by opening up some
contacts which breaks the circuit.

(Fig. 5.2.3. Structure and symbol of electromagnetic relay)

they are used to control high current circuits with the help of low current signals.
4. They are also used as protective relays. By this function all the faults during transmission
and reception can be detected and isolated.

21
5.3 Bluetooth Module:
HC 05 Bluetooth module is a module that allows wireless communication between
microcontrollers or between a microcontroller and a device with Bluetooth capability.

(Fig. 5.3.1. Bluetooth Module)

Wireless communication is swiftly replacing the wired connection when it comes to

electronics and communication. Designed to replace cable connections HC-05 uses serial
communication to communicate with the electronics. Usually, it is used to connect small
devices like mobile phones using a short-range wireless connection to exchange files. It uses
the 2.45GHz frequency band. The transfer rate of the data can vary up to 1Mbps and is in
range of 10 meters. The HC-05 module can be operated within 4-6V of power supply. It
22
supports baud rate of 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, etc. Most importantly it can be operated in
Master-Slave mode which means it will neither send or receive data from external sources.

23
5.4. LED:
An LED or a Light Emitting Diode is semiconductor device that emits light due to
Electroluminescence effect. An LED is basically a PN Junction Diode, which emits light when
forward biased. Light Emitting Diodes are almost everywhere i.e., LEDs in Cars, Bikes, Street
Lights, Home Lighting, Office Lighting, Mobile Phones, Televisions and many more.

(Fig. 5.4. LED)

The reason for such wide range of implementation of LEDs is its advantages over
traditional incandescent bulbs and the recent compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). Few
Advantages of LEDs over incandescent and CFL light sources are mentioned below:

1. Low Power Consumption

24
2. Small Size

3. Fast Switching

4. Physically Robust

5. Long Lasting

Because of these advantages, LEDs have become quite popular among a large set of
people Electronics Engineers, Electronic Hobbyists and Electronics Enthusiasts often work
with LEDs for various projects. As mentioned in the introduction, an LED is a semiconductor
light source. It consists of a PN Junction Diode and when voltage is applied to the LED,
electrons and holes recombine in the PN Junction and release energy in the form of light
(Photons). The light emitted by an LED is usually monochromatic i.e., of single color and the
color is dependent on the energy band gap of the semiconductor.

Light Emitting Diodes can be manufactured to emit all the wavelengths of visible
spectrum i.e. from Red (620nm to 750nm) to blue – violet (380nm to 490nm). The electrical
symbol of an LED is similar to that of a PN Junction Diode. The following image shows a Red
LED along with symbols of PN Junction Diode and LED.

5.5. LED Bulb:

An LED lamp or LED light bulb is an electric light for use in light fixtures that produces
light using one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LED lamps have a lifespan many times
longer than equivalent incandescent lamps, and are significantly more efficient than most
fluorescent lamps, with some LED chips able to emit up to 303 lumens per watt (as claimed
by Cree and some other LED manufacturers). However, LED lamps require an electronic LED
driver circuit when operated from mains power lines, and losses from this circuit mean the
efficiency of the lamp is lower than the efficiency of the LED chips it uses.

25
(Fig. 5.5. LED Bulb)

LEDs run on direct current (DC), whereas mains current is alternating current (AC) and
usually at much higher voltage than the LED can accept. LED lamps can contain a circuit for
converting the mains AC into DC at the correct voltage. These circuits contain rectifiers,
capacitors, and may have other active electronic components, which may also permit the lamp
to be dimmed. In an LED filament lamp, the driving circuit is simplified because many LED
junctions in series have approximately the same operating voltage as the AC supply.

• Wattage: 0.5 Watt
• Long Life Up to: 30000 Hours
26
• Material Plastic
• No Mercury Content, No UV Radiation

3.Long operational life up to 50,000 hours.
4. Compact light source no other lamp possesses such small dimensions for a comparative
light output.
5. No radiation: the LEDs do not emit ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) radiation. They do not
radiate heat in the direction of the illuminated object-they can be used to illuminate materials
that fade easily like food, works of art etc.
6. Durable lamps: The LEDs are durable against impact and vibration.
7. Dimmable LEDs the LEDs can be dimmed.
8. Color lamps Color light can be produced effectively-over two million colors.

27
5.6. Jumper Wire:
A jump wire (also known as jumper wire, or jumper) is an electrical wire, or group of them
in a cable, with a connector or pin at each end (or sometimes without them-simply "tinned"),
which is normally used to interconnect the components of a breadboard or other prototype or
test circuit, internally or with other equipment or components, without soldering.

(Fig. 5.6. Jumper Wire)

There are different types of jumper wires. Some have the same type of electrical connector
at both ends, while others have different connectors. Some common connectors are Solid tips-
are used to connect on/with a breadboard or female header connector. The arrangement of the
elements and case of insertion on a breadboard allows increasing the mounting density of both
components and jump wires without fear of short-circuits. The jump wires vary in size and color
to distinguish the different working signals.
1. Crocodile clips- are used, among other applications, to temporarily bridge sensors, buttons
and other elements of prototypes with components or equipment that have arbitrary
connectors, wires, screw terminals, etc.
2. Banana connectors are commonly used on test equipment for DC and low-frequency AC
signals.

28
3. Registered jack - are commonly used in telephone (RJ11) and computer networking (RJ45).
4. RCA connectors-are often used for audio, low-resolution composite video signals, or other
low-frequency applications requiring a shielded cable.
5. RF connectors-are used to carry radio frequency signals between circuits, test equipment,
and antennas.

or system to those of an otherwise incompatible device or system. Some modify power or signal
attributes, while others merely adapt the physical form of one electrical connector to another.

(Fig. 5.7. Adapter)

6.1. MIT App Inventor:

In recent years the Internet has reached a large number of people across the world.
And this has motivated all the people who own businesses or people who want to connect
to a large number of people to use and make mobile /laptop applications. These applications
provide the customer with a way of easily exploring the content of the provider and it helps
the provider with an ample opportunity to present their content more efficiently than they
could when they were using websites.

But not all people can make the applications. They require some medium to get their
business on an application or an app. One way is to hire app developers. It can prove to be
costly for some new business setters or the businessmen can be living in some remote part
of the country where app developers are not present. Hence, to make app development
easier MIT provides us with the MIT app inventor. This is a platform that makes app
development easy for anyone who knows to code or not. App Inventor is a cloud-based tool,
by which you can build Android applications using a web browser. This website offers all the
support you’ll need to learn how to build your own apps.

32
6.2. Arduino Software:

The Arduino software (IDE) is an open-source software, which is used to program the
Arduino boards, and is an integrated development environment, developed by Arduino. Allow
to write and upload code to Arduino boards. And it consisted of many libraries and a set of
examples of mini-projects. Arduino software (IDE) is compatible with different operating
systems (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X), and supports the programming languages (C/C++),
and Embedded C. The Arduino software is easy to use for beginners or advanced users. It
uses to get started with electronics programming and robotics, and build interactive
prototypes. So, Arduino software is a tool to develop new things. and create new electronic
projects, by Anyone (children, hobbyists, engineers, programmers, … etc).

A standard API which is also known as the Arduino Programming Language is inspired
by the Processing language and used with a modified version of the Processing IDE. In
addition to using traditional compiler toolchains, the Arduino project provides an integrated
development environment (IDE) and a command line tool developed in Go. The Arduino
project began in 2005 as a tool for students at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea,
Italy,[3] aiming to provide a low-cost and easy way for novices and professionals to create
devices that interact with their environment using sensors and actuators. Common examples
of such devices intended for beginner hobbyists include simple robots, thermostats,
and motion detectors.
