IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing or ACTIVITY: Review
presenting the new
lesson Note to the Teacher:
Asking questions on illustrating and finding the nth term of an arithmetic
sequence.
B. Establishing a Finding a certain number of terms between given terms of an arithmetic sequence
purpose for the lesson is a common task in studying arithmetic sequences.
C. Presenting examples ACTIVITY (Divide the class into five)
of the new lesson Answer the following questions below:
1. Give the first term and last term of an arithmetic sequence whose sequence
arithmetic means are 10, 15, and 20.
(Expected answers: first term is 5 and last term is 25.)
2. Insert 3 arithmetic means between 12 and 52.
(Expected answers: 12, 22, 32, 42, 52)
D. Discussing new The teacher discusses the definition and concepts of Arithmetic Means in the
concepts and sequence.(Refer to Worksheet –Discusssion)
practicing new skills
#1 The terms between any two nonconsecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence are
known as arithmetic means.
E. Developing Mastery ACTIVITY: Individual Activity
Answer the following:
1. Insert an arithmetic mean between 3 and 45.
(Expected answer: 24)
2. Insert 3 arithmetic means between 10 and 42.
(Expected answers: 10, 18, 26, 34, 42)

ARITHMETIC MEAN
The numbers between arithmetic extremes are called arithmetic mean, found in an
arithmetic sequence wherein each term is obtained by adding a fixed value called the
common difference.
Example : 4, 7, 10, 13 16 the arithmetic means are 7, 10 and 13
Example : 9, 15 , 21 the arithmetic mean is 15
The arithmetic mean or the “mean” between two numbers is sometimes called the
AVERAGE of two numbers. It is also possible to insert any numbers of terms between
any two given terms such as that the whole set of numbers will form arithmetic sequence.
Example: Insert 3 arithmetic means between 1 and 17
Use the arithmetic sequence formula to find the common difference (d).
an = a1 + (n-1)d a 2 = a1 + d a3 = a1 + 2d a4 = a1 + 3d
a5 = 1 + (5-1)d a2 = 1 + 4 a3 = 1 + 2(4) a4 = 1 + 3(4)
