SEMI -DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS IV

I. Objectives
a. Interpret data presented in single vertical and horizontal bar graphs

II. Subject Matter

Interpreting Data Presented in Single Vertical and Horizontal Bar Graph
Reference: Mathematics Quarter 4- Module 7 Interpreting Data Presented
in Single Vertical and Horizontal Bar Graph
Materials: Tarpapel, picture of single vertical and horizontal bar graphs)
Value Focus: Accuracy, Teamwork

III. Procedure
Teacher's Activity
A.Preliminary Activities
1. Drill
Let's have an activity on skip counting by 2's, by 5's and by 10's.
by 2's by 5's by 10's
2 5 10
4 10 20
6 15 30
8 20 40
10 25 50
12 30 60
14 35 70
16 40 80
18 45 90
20 50 100
2. Review
Last meeting, we discussed about on how to interpret data presented in
pictograph.

Number of Flowers made by Each Pupil

Sarah

Juwan

Zaira

Zepho

Lita

Legend: represents 5 flowers

What is the title of the pictograph? ans. "Numbers of flowers made by
each pupil."
What is the legend? ans. "flower teacher"
Who made the least number of flowers? ans. "zephora teacher"
What is the total number of flowers made by Juwan and Zaira? ans. "45
flowers"
How many flowers were made by Zepho and Sarah? ans. "35 flowers"

3. Motivation

What can you say about this picture? "a graph"

Do you know what kind of graph is this? "a bar graph "
Do you know what are the kinds of bar graph? The two kinds of bar
graph are the vertical and horizontal bar graph.

B. Presentation
Our lesson for today is about on how to interpret data presented on a
single vertical and horizontal bar graph.
C. Discussion

Bar Graph is used to show comparison of data from the different

variables.
Parts of Bar Graph
Title- tells us what is the bar graph is all about
Scale – numerical value
Label- non-numeric value

Where do we find these parts?

-The vertical and horizontal axis.
What are being compared in bar graph?
data in horizontal and vertical axis.

Two Kinds of Bar Graph

HORIZONTAL BAR GRAPH VERTICAL BAR

GRAPH

What is the similarity of the two bar graphs? Both have title and have the
same data.
What are the differences of the two graphs?
In the horizontal bar graph, the vertical axis represents the label and
horizontal axis represents the scales.
-In the vertical bar graph, the horizontal axis represents the label and
vertical axis represent the scales
-
How do we interpret the data in different bar graphs?

To interpret different bar graphs, we have to:

 look into the parts
 find the information in the vertical and horizontal axes
 look into labels and scales
 compare heights or lengths of bars across groups or categories and
look for differences.
 compare categories within groups

Now that you know the data in the bar graph.

Let us answer the following questions.
1.What is the title of the bar graph? -Fruit harvested in Kilograms
2. In the vertical bar graph, what information is place along the horizontal
axis? -fuits
How about on vertical axis? -No of kilograms
3.In the horizontal bar graph, what information is placed along the horizontal
axis?
-No. of kilograms
4. How many kilograms of atis were harvested? -25 kilograms
5.How many kilograms of mangoes were harvested? -20 kilograms
6. Which fruit was the least harvested in kilograms? -Mango
7.Which fruit was the most harvested in kilograms? -Guava
8.How many more atis were harvested than mango? - 5 kilograms
9. How many more guava was harvested than mango? - 10 kilograms
10. how many kilograms of fruits were harvested in all? -75 kilograms of
fruits

D. Generalization
What are the kinds of bar graph?
- vertical bar graph
- horizontal bar graph

What are the three parts of a bar graph?

The three parts of bar graphs:
-title, scales and labels

How do we interpret the data in different bar graphs?

To interpret different bar graphs, we have to:
 look into the parts
 find the information in the vertical and horizontal axes
 look into labels and scales
 compare heights or lengths of bars across groups or categories and
look for differences.
 compare categories within groups

E. Application
I will group you into two groups. Row 1 and 2 will be the 1st group and
row 3 and 4 will be the 2nd group. Each group has an envelope. Inside the
envelope has a picture of graph and guided questions. You will answer those
questions in 10 minutes. After that we're going to check your answers. The
fastest group with correct answers will be the winner.
1st envelope:

Guide Questions:
1. What is found in the vertical axis? (The number of kids.)
2. What is found in the horizontal axis? (The different activities.)
3. What is the title of the bar graph?
(Favorite Activities Kids Love to Do on Christmas Day)
4. What activity is preferred by most kids? (Go caroling)
5. How many more kids preferred to go caroling than exchange gifts? 25
6. What kind of bar graph is this? "Vertical bar graph"
2nd envelope:

Guided Questions:
1. What is found in the vertical axis?
2. What is found in the horizontal axis?
3. What is the title of the bar graph?
4. How many gold ribbons were sold?
5. How many more red ribbons were sold than blue ribbon?
6. What kind of bar graph is this?
IV. Evaluation
Read and interpret the bar graphs. Write your answer on your answer

sheet.
1. What is found in the vertical axis?
2. On which day was the sale of quail eggs the least?
3. On which day was the sale of quail eggs the greatest?
4. How many more sales on Monday than on Tuesday?
5. On which two days were the number of quail eggs sold the same?

6. What is found in the vertical axis?

7. Who got the lowest number of votes?
8. Who got the highest number of votes?
9. How many more votes did Andrei get than Allan?
10. What is the total number of students who voted in the election?
V. Assignment
Interpret the data of this bar graph. Answer the questions below.

Questions:
1. What data are found in the vertical axis?
2. What data are found in the horizontal axis?
3. What kind of graph is shown?
4 What are being compared?
5. What is the title of the graph?
6. How many more cases in March than in February?
