EP2 (electromagnetic theory)

Problems in “Exercise Day 3” July 23, 2024

* The answers must include the derivation processes.

Problem 1

Problem 2
2-1 A circular coil has r [m] in radius and consists of n wound turns of wire. An externally produced
magnetic field of magnitude 2.60 mT is perpendicular to the coil.
2-1(a) If no current is in the coil, what is magnetic flux linkage?
2-1(b) When the current in the coil is 3.80 A in a certain direction, the net flux through the coil is
found to vanish. What is the inductance of the coil?

2-2 Coil 1 has L1 = 25 mH and N1 = 100 turns. Coil 2 has L2 = 40 mH and N2 = 200 turns. The coils are
fixed in place; their mutual inductance M is 3.0 mH. A 6.0 mA current in coil 1 is changing at the rate
of 4.0 A/s.
2-2(a) What magnetic flux Φ12 links coil 1, and
2-2(b) what self-induced emf appears in that coil?
2-2(c) What magnetic flux Φ21 links coil 2, and
2-2(d) what mutually induced emf appears in that coil?

Problem 3
Figure 3 shows a hollow toroid having a square cross section, a on a side and an inner radius of ri. The
number of turns is N and the current is i. Using Ampere’s law, you are to derive the magnitude of the
magnetic flux density B inside the toroid by assuming that the vector ⃗ is perpendicular to the cross
section. (a) Determine the Amperian loop and draw it with its size in the picture. (b) What is the
condition that you obtain from the symmetry of this system together with the Amperian loop? (c)
Derive the magnitude of the magnetic flux density.

Problem 4
Figure 4 shows a rectangular loop of wire immersed in a magnetic field. The loop is in the xy plane.
The size and resistance of the loop are [ ] × [ ] and [Ω], respectively. Here, the current
shown in the figure is positive.
(a) If the magnetic flux density (magnetic field in FoP) is ⃗ = where B0 is constant, what is the
magnetic flux passing through the loop?
(b) Then, what is the induced emf ℰ produced in the loop?
(c) What is the induced current i? Determine the sign according to the arrows in the figure.
(d) What is the induced current i if ⃗ = where a is constant and t is the time.
(e) What is the induced current i if ⃗ = where a is constant?
(f) What is the induced current i if ⃗ = where a is constant?
(g) What is the induced current i if ⃗ = where is constant?
(h) What is the induced current i if ⃗ = { − ( − ) } where a, b and v are constant?
(i) What is the induced current i if ⃗ = sin{ ( − )} where a, b and v are constant?
(j) What is the induced current i if ⃗ = sin{ ( − )} where a, b and v are constant?
(k) What is the induced current i if ⃗ = { − ( − ) } ̂+{ − ( − ) } where a, b and v
are constant?
(l) What is the induced current i if ⃗ = { − ( − − ) } ̂+{ − ( − − ) } where a, b
and v are constant?

Problem 5
1-3 Show that magnitude of internal magnetic flux density B of an ideal solenoidal coil is expressed
as B = 0 i n using Ampere’s law. Here, 0, i, and n are magnetic permeability in vacuum, current
in the coil and number of turns per meter, respectively.

Problem 6
The figure below shows a spherical shell with uniform volume charge density [C/m3], inner radius
a [m], and outer radius b [m]. Find the magnitude of the electric field depending on the radial distance
r by using Gauss’ law and draw its graph.
