5 (a) Define the following terms

(b) (i) A string of length 75cm has a mass of 8.2g. If the tension in the string is 18N. Calculate
the frequency of the first and third harmonics
(ii) Account for the fact that a distant lightning flash is seen before the thunder is heard.
(c) Two Boys stand facing each other, 200m apart, on one side of a high wall and at the same
perpendicular distance from it. When one fires a pistol the other hears a report 0.60s after the
flash and a second report 0.25s after the first. Explain this and calculate:
(i) The velocity of sound in air.
(ii) The perpendicular distance of the men from the wall.

9 (a) A house has five rooms, each with a 60W, 240V bulb. If the bulbs are switched ON from 7:00
p.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily, determine the power in KWH consumed by the bulb per day.
(b) A circuit in a house is protected by a 10 A fuse. The circuit is connected to the 240 V mains. The
following appliances are connected to the circuit:

Determine whether the fuse will blow on or off if all appliances are turned on.
Determine;
(i) The combined capacitance of the three capacitors.

10. (a) i. State the laws of electromagnetic induction
ii. Mention two advantages of A.C generator over D.C generator
(b)A step-up transformer has 10,000 turns in the secondary coil and 100 turns through the primary
coil. An alternating current of 5.0A flows in the primary circuit when connected to 12V a.c. supply.
i. Calculate the voltage across the secondary coil.

ii. If the transformer has an efficiency of 90%. What is the current in the secondary coil?
(c). i. Describe the structure and mode of action of simple d.c generator.
ii. What should be done in order to increase the speed of rotation in a d.c electric motor?
11. (a) (i) Distinguish between speed and velocity.
(ii) Define uniform velocity and uniform acceleration.
(b) Sketch the diagram of a body which starts from rest and accelerates uniformly for sometimes to a
constant velocity and then maintains this velocity for a certain period of time before decelerating
uniformly to a stop.
(c) A car moving with a uniform velocity of 100 m/s is decelerated at 2.5 m/s 2 to a stop. Calculate. (i)
The time taken for the car to stop.
(ii) The distance travelled by the car before it is brought to rest.
