DAY
1

“Leadership is cause, everything else is effect”.

Prof. Stephen Adei
Why be a Leader?
DAY
•1 It’s better to be at the top!
• Regardless of choice of career, leadership (soft skill) will take you to
the top!
• Critical skill employers look for.
• Leadership is probably the most powerful force on earth!
• Nothing significant happens without the initiative or action of a
leader.
• Leadership unleashes the fullness of your potential.
• Smart people develop and position themselves for future
leadership.
• Everyone is a leader, but few are effective leaders.
Why is Leadership So Crucial to National Devepm’t?
DAY
1• We are all at the mercy of our leaders.
• Leadership by and large controls the peace and security of a nation.
• Nearly every nation, family, community, organization, school,
religious group is crying for an effective leader to take them to their
desired future.
• Singapore, Malaysia, & Ghana where they are as a result of
Leadership.
• Nothing significant happens without the initiative or action of a
leader.
• The principle of the leadership lid.
• Great leadership is the security of the next generation.
Can you think of a country that has/had an
effective leader in place and is doing very
well now?

Why do you think this leader is/was so

effective?
My favorite definition of Leadership
DAY
1• Over 600 definitions of leadership. My favorite, and
perhaps, the most comprehensive one is:

Leadership is the capacity to influence others

through inspiration motivated by passion
generated by vision produced by a
conviction, ignited by a purpose.
(Dr. Myles Munroe).
Capacity: an ability that comes through knowledge, training and
experience.
Vision: A clear picture of the better future the leader sees.
Purpose: The reason behind your vision.
Conviction: Unshakable believe/faith in something (vision).
Passion: Inner drive to achieve a certain goal (or vision).
Inspiration: As opposed to force.
Influence: The capacity to have an effect on the character,
development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect
itself.
STYLES OR TYPES OF LEADERS
• Autocratic Leaders (dictatorial & close supervision)

• Transactional Leaders (rewards and punishment)

• Quiet Leaders (no force, leading by example)

• Participative or Democratic Leaders (act like facilitators)

• Charismatic Leadership (interpersonal)

• Servant Leaders (serving followers)

• Transformational Leaders (motivating towards ideals)

• Inclusive Leaders
• Etc.
What style of leadership STANDS OUT in its
ability to accelerate national development?
DAY
Servant Leadership
1
• Many styles or approaches to leadership. Servant leadership
is one of them (a more recent leadership approach in terms
of leadership theory, but not in practice).

• In terms of academic & mainstream business leadership,

servant leadership was introduced by Greenleaf (1970). He
coined the phrase servant leadership in his foundational
essay The Servant as Leader.
DAY
Servant Leadership Cont.
1
• Greenleaf summarized his meaning of servant leadership by
stating that the great leader is seen as “servant first” and
that simple fact is the key to his greatness.
• To Greenleaf, “Leadership was bestowed on a man who was
by nature a servant” (Spears & Lawrence, 2002, p. 20).
• According to him, the difference between a servant-first
kind of leadership and a leader-first kind of leadership is in
the level of care taken by the servant-first leader to make
sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being
served.

PSYCHOLOGY & NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

NATIONAL
PSYCHOLOGY LEADERSHIP
DEVELOPMENT
If I Could Go Back 26yrs To L200:
DAY
1
What Would I Do Again?
• I would still study Psychology
(power to understand people)
• I would still work while at the university
(it made me one of the first UG graduates to get a very good job; and it gave me a
great start to my career)
• I would still buy and read all the motivational and personal development books I
bought (around Balme) while on campus.
(they opened me wisdom up to)
• I would still volunteer a lot of my time to organize leadership conferences on and
off campus. Serving others:
(it helped me find my purpose in life).
• I would still be a person of strong faith, believes & values
(It has protected me)
• I would still dream big, belive in and expect a great future.
(dreams do come true!)
What I would NOT do
DAY
1
if I could go back 26yrs to UG L200
• Buying some expensive things to feel and look good around
my course mates (it was a waste; I’d buy and read a lot of
books & invest heavily in myself)

• Get into a serious relationship in my final year; I was too

young and unprepared to make one of the most important
choices and commitments in life.
(I became depressed and it nearly destroyed by life).
