(a) Course Description


This course covers the fundamentals of real analysis: sequence of real numbers, convergence
of sequence, cauchy sequence, sequential approach to continuity, Riemann integralable,
uniformly continuous functions, sequence of functions and their convergence, series of
functions and their convergence.
(b) Course Objectives
The course objective is
1. To introduce students to the fundamentals of mathematical analysis and reading
and writing mathematical proofs.
2. To understand the axiomatic foundation of the real number system, the notion of
completeness and some of its consequences.

(d) Syllabus
MODULE 1 Sequence and series of real numbers

Sequences, convergence of a sequence, bounded and monotonic sequence. Nested Interval Theorem. Cauchy
sequences, Cauchy's principle of convergence. Limit points of a sequence and Bolzano-Weirastrass Theorem for
sequences. The limit superior and limit inferior of a sequence and related results. Sequential approach to
continuity. The boundedness theorem and the intermediate value theorem for continuous functions. Uniform
Continuity and related results.
MODULE 2 The Riemann Integral and properties

Definition of the Riemann integral. Necessary and sufficient condition for existence of Riemann integral. The
Darboux definition of an integral: upper and lower integrals. The Darboux integral and the integrability criterion.
Equivalence of Darboux and Riemann integrability. Algebra of integrable functions. Riemann integrability of |f|
whenever f is Riemann integrable. Fundamental theorems and the mean value theorem of integral calculus.
MODULE 3 Sequence and Series of Functions

Sequences and series of functions. The point-wise and the uniform convergence on an interval. Cauchy's criterion
for uniform convergence. The 𝑀𝑛 -test for uniform convergence of sequences. Weierstrass's M-Test, Abel's and
Dirichlet's tests for uniform convergence of series. Uniform convergence and continuity. Uniform convergence and
integrability. Uniform convergence and differentiability. Weierstrass's approximation theorem.
