According to Microsoft what are the:

Minimum Hardware Requirements for Installing Windows 10 / Windows Server 2016:

CPU GHz

RAM for installing a Virtual Machine: MB

Disk Space GB

Besides hardware what else will be needed before you can both start and
complete the installation?

Where can you get these?

We have already downloaded the Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows Server 2016
Datacenter 64-bit (English) iso image. The ISO Image is placed in the Public Folder
on your Lab computer, or the link is in Canvas. The product key for this will be
given in the lab class. However, it is only allowed to be used for this class.

Introduction to using Hyper-V

There are in total 10 computers required in the Network Administration lab activities. It is not
possible for each student to control 10 physical computers at once, whether it is space or cost
the of running those machines. Hyper-V is Microsoft’s software for running multiple and
independent computers within the software so that they can deploy multiple virtual computer on
a single computer hardware. We call the physical computer the host and its operating system
is called the host operating system. The computers that run inside the software is called virtual
computers, virtual machines, or guests. The part of the host operating system that allows the
virtual machines to share the hardware is called the hypervisor, and this is where Hyper-V gets
its name.

Most current computers (i.e. those built since 2012) have processors that support virtualisation
with hypervisors. Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or above with Windows 8 Professional or
above can all function as a guest operating system for Hyper-V. Unfortunately, the home
editions of Windows 8 & Windows 10 do not support Hyper-V. If you do have to learn how to
install Hyper-V

• Enabling Hyper-V Manager on your computer, click here.

• Installing Hyper-V Virtual Machines, click here.

However, keep in mind that you need lots of RAM, and lots of free disk space.

Introduction to using Oracle VirtualBox

As Swinburne Sarawak computer lab is currently having issue with the usage of Hyper-V, for
this semester, we will be using Oracle VM VirtualBox as a replacement for virtualization.
To use Hyper-V, it is required for the host machine to support Intel VT-x or AMD AMD-V with
host operating system of Windows 10/11 -Professional/Enterprise/Education and Administrator
rights to the system which students do not have as it is not part of the SOE.

What is Oracle VirtualBox?

Similar to Hyper-V, Oracle VirtualBox is a third-party (non-Microsoft) software program that
allows you to create and run multiple virtual machines (VMs) on a single physical computer.
Each virtual machine acts like a separate computer with its own operating system, programs,
and files, but they all run on the same physical hardware.
This means you can use VirtualBox to create and test different operating systems, try out new
software without affecting your main computer, or run applications that are only compatible with
specific operating systems.

VirtualBox is free to download and use, and it's available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and
Solaris operating systems.
The bad and good news is:

Creating a Windows 10 Virtual Machine on OracleVM
1. Start OracleVM Program. From the Actions pane, click New.

2. Create Virtual Machine box would appear. Name the new Virtual Machine as
sWin10PC203XX (substitute XX with your initial, i.e KA, MJ, etc), ensure the machine
folder is placed in the PC D Drive (or any other external drive you may use).

3. Assign the minimum amount of memory for a virtual machine as recorded in the
Preparation section at the start of this document. Preferably 2048MB of RAM.

4. Choose Create virtual hardisk now. Use the default format VDI for the virtual
hardisk. Choose Dynamically allocated to decrease required disk space.

5. Set the disk space as the minimum required amount (16GB is the minimum amount
but allocate 20GB in this case for other softwares may be required). Please choose
to folder place your virtual hardisk in the correct position. Anything in the C drive, in
the lab computer would be deleted once it is turned off. Currently, the lab still does
not have secondary storage. If you do have external SSD/HDD, you may use it so
you can bring your progress back home.

22.Start the Virtual Machine and proceed with Windows Server 2016 installation.

23.Look under the Input menu.

Notice that it shows you input to the keyboard shortcut for Ctrl+Alt+Del. This
means that whenever you are asked to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to log onto a virtual
machine in Virtual Box, you need to insert it using this Input. This is because
Ctrl+Alt+Del is reserved for the host operating system.

We will not be using Snapshot in these labs, but at home it is very useful. It will save
the state of the virtual machine.

You can revert back to the previous working setting in the Snapshot shown above.

This will allow you to use previous state of the virtual machine before you make
changes to it.

24.There is no preinstalled operating system in the VM hard disk, and we are going to
install a fresh Windows Server 2016, click Install now. Setup will start.

We will only use the installed machine for the duration of this lab only, so click I don’t
have a product key, then click Next. Product Key is provided for you in Canvas for
TNE10005 educational purposes only.

Then scroll down until you see File and Printer Sharing and click the check boxes
under the Private and Public columns, and click OK.

Testing the Network

37. Switch back to the sWin10PC203 virtual machine, and log on.

38. Launch Command Prompt (see steps 11-12).

39. Type ping 192.168.100.100

If you receive a reply from 192.168.100.100, then you have verified that you
have network connection between the two virtual machines.

40. Does it not work? Why? For 2 devices in a LAN to communicate. It needs to be
connected to the same Switch. Have at least IP address and Subnet mask
configured. Anything else? Security settings? IP addressing issue?

Pack Up
1. Shut down all virtual machines.
2. Sign off the PC

Extension
1. Change the IP Address on SWin16Svr3XX to 192.168.10.100. From
